Career opportunities at the world's most productive astronomical observatory.
Info
ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and is supported by 16 member-states along with the host state of Chile and with Australia as a Strategic Partner. ESO's main mission, laid down in the 1962 Convention, is to provide state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and astrophysicists, allowing them to conduct front-line science in the best conditions. By building and operating a suite of the world's most powerful ground-based astronomical telescopes enabling important scientific discoveries, ESO offers numerous possibilities for technology spin-off and transfer, together with high technology contract opportunities and is a dramatic showcase for European industry. Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three unique observing sites in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor.

📢 Breaking news! Our Very Large Telescope (VLT) has discovered a planet orbiting the closest single star to our Sun! On this newly discovered exoplanet, which has at least half the mass of Venus and a surface temperature of about 125 °C, a year lasts just over three Earth days. The star in question is the red dwarf known as Barnard's star, located 6 light-years away from us. Note that Proxima Centauri, while being the closest star to us, is part of the Alpha Centauri’s three-star group, making Barnard's star the closest single star to Earth. Moreover, scientists also found hints of three more exoplanet candidates orbiting Barnard's star. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eT7KnhEs Artist's impression by ESO/M. Kornmesser

The last laser source of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) has been completed! The ELT will be equipped with six powerful lasers that will excite sodium atoms in Earth's upper atmosphere, creating artificial stars. These ‘stars’ are used to measure the blurring caused by the atmosphere so that the ELT’s adaptive mirrors can correct for it, enabling the telescope to deliver razor-sharp images all over the sky. But there's more: laser sources for the GRAVITY upgrade to ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) have also been completed. At a ceremony near Munich today, staff from ESO and German company TOPTICA Photonics celebrated the completion of all these laser sources. More information ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ewxqW5Yw

Our VISTA telescope has captured the most detailed infrared map ever of the Milky Way! At 500 terabytes of data and comprising 200 000 images, this 3D chart of our home galaxy is the largest observational project ever carried out with an ESO telescope, and the result of 13 years of observations! In particular, it gives us an accurate view of the inner regions of our galaxy, which were previously hidden by dust. Discover more: https://lnkd.in/eZR-S2Dh 📷 ESO/VVVX survey
