Claire Buckwar, thank you for your kind comment. Indeed, it seems that we can get some guidance from consumer packaging in the jungle of mechanical designs. As to our experience, any part you can avoid is good and any process step you can avoid is even better. In that context, the great work done by Schott in the lid area is of utmost importance. We are keen to see things moving forward!
Improving lithium battery performance with hermetic lid systems | Head of Strategic Business Field - Battery Solutions
One of my favorite industry events is the Battery Experts Forum, this year in Darmstadt, hosted by "BMZ Germany GmbH. 🔋 This year’s conference was special because it brought together key speakers from the leading battery industry players as well as OEMs and academia. It also highlighted industry news that is usually not presented in high glossy presentations. Beyond the discussions during the conference and at the booths, the evening networking event featured live music and more, setting a wonderful scene for deeper discussions as well as some good company of good people. 💡 I had 3 big takeaways: Firstly again, there were several presentations on the hot topic of #sodium-ion batteries, one stood out with a performance comparison of state-of-the art energy densities and cycle lives showing that sodium-ion batteries are at the heels of LFP cells already. Secondly, we received an eye opening analysis of the safety performance of ASSBs dividing safety into four aspects: mechanical, electrical, environmental, and chemical. For several aspects, the safety data is still missing and in some aspects the safety performance is actually comparative to Lithium-Ion cells. The third highlight was the presentation by "Bernd Dr. Ullmann on cell packaging referring to his long experience in the food packaging industry with gigantic volumes of packages. The evolution of the food packaging showed that for cell cans the number of welds is reduced to the absolute minimum as a weld always represents a risk. Regarding current battery cell packaging, one can observe several new designs with an increased number of welds - which is actually right the opposite development. Does that make sense? ➡ Swipe through for some impressions of the event!
