Decarbonizing heat is on top of the agenda for E.ON. For the energy world, the right partnerships will make all the difference.    Our team at E.ON Group Innovation is constantly scouting within a global innovation ecosystem for innovative solutions for the world of new energy. E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions ‘s investment in the British company Naked Energy Ltd shows that our collaborative approach works. Naked Energy’s Virtu solar collectors have a modular design and the world’s highest energy density #solar technology, proven to be up to four times more impactful at offsetting CO2 emissions than conventional solar PV panels.    Here’s how we got here in only one year:    1. In 2023 E.ON Group Innovation initiated the partnership through the global accelerator Free Electrons Program, where our experts identified the advanced Naked Energy technology. 2. This led to a test installation at our Innovation Garage in #SiliconValley (pictured below), where E.ON’s local team has established a hub for testing and nurturing hand-picked significant tech and highly relevant solutions ready to drive the energy transition. 3. In June of this year, together with our colleagues from E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions and the Naked Energy-team, we onboarded our operational teams from E.ON UK and E.ON Romania to help them understand how this solar technology can help massively reduce the carbon footprint of our B2B customers and commercially leverage it for E.ON's B2B business.    4. Now Naked Energy and E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions have formed a strategic partnership with significant business potential to decarbonize the heating sector. The investment will enable Naked Energy to accelerate the international distribution of its award-winning solar heat and power technology with the adoption of innovative new business models. We can't wait to see what comes next for this exciting partnership and are delighted to have been part of this productive process! The #decarbonisation of #heat, especially of buildings, is one of the major challenges of the energy transition and thus a focus of E.ON Group Innovation #innovation work. After 5 months of scouting in Free Electrons Program, we further developed our #collaboration with our #partners in the global #startup ecosystem during the three days of the Master Module in Montreal.  Together with our colleagues from E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions, we are now launching the first pilot around the energy efficiency of building envelopes - a critical factor to significantly reduce #energy losses.  Congratulations to QEA Tech and we look forward to the next level of collaboration and testing their #technology in E.ON's buildings. We are excited to find out how the solution can contribute to the reduction of the CO2 footprints of buildings. The summer can be hot and sticky 🥵 – but what to do if you don’t have air-conditioning, as is the case with many Europeans in their homes and places of work? Even for those who do have AC, cranking it up may come with a sense of uncertainty about higher costs and the impact on your carbon footprint. Air-conditioners and electric fans already account for 10% of global electricity consumption. So how can you stay cool in a more sustainable way? 🌱🪭 Here’s advice from our energy experts: 💡Upgrade your windows and curtains 🪟 Your windows can have an outsize effect on your home’s temperature – up to 87% of the heat entering your home depends on factors like glass and how they’re made. Investing in curtains or blinds can do a lot to banish unwanted thermal energy. 💡Avoid heat-generating appliances ♨️ Some appliances give off heat as part of their normal functioning: ovens, irons, and hairdryers are common culprits. Limit their use with a little creativity: use a microwave instead of the oven, or even invest in more energy-efficient options like an air-fryer. Hang clothes to dry and get rid of wrinkles with watery mist from a spray bottle. 💡Ditch the energy hogs ⚡ Some electric-powered items in the home generate waste heat, thermal energy generated as a byproduct, that can sneakily drive up temperatures. These could include older lightbulbs, televisions, dishwashers, and even your fridge. 💡Buy the right air-conditioner ❄️ The right AC can make a huge difference to your energy consumption and comfort. Air-conditioners are actually more efficient than space heaters; a 2kW aircon unit uses 470 watts an hour, while a 1kW electric heater will use 1kW in that time. The efficiency of an air-conditioner is measured by the energy efficiency ratio (EER). This is the cooling ability (measured in BTU = British Thermal Unit) versus the power consumption in watts. The size of the room will dictate what cooling capacity you need. A small room of 9 to 14 m² will require 7000-8000 BTU. A larger room of 42 to 60 m² will require up to 25,000. Picking the most efficient option can save you money – and sweat. 💡Keep the AC clean 🧼 Air filters get dirty over time, and this means your AC will have to work harder. Even worse, if the evaporator coil is covered in dust, this acts as an insulator and prevents proper heat absorption. All this means more energy for weaker results – a dirty unit could be using up to 25% more power than it needs to. What are your strategies to keep a cool head on hot days? UN World Food Programme WFP - Inspiring exchange with Chief Innovator Bernhard Kowatsch and Regina Schmidt   You may be wondering: Why in an Energy Executive talking to an NGO Executive of the WFP Innovation Accelerator?   It's quite simple: We both have the mission to solve huge challenges on the planet. Bernhard Kowatsch and his team provide ideas and solutions to save people from starvation. At E.ON Group Innovation we develop solutions for the energy transition to help reduce global warming. My goal was to learn from him and his experience, and to understand how the UN World Food Programme drives innovation and to figure out how we probably can collaborate in the Future.    Let me start by saying that I am deeply impressed by the work of the WFP and its Innovation Accelerator 🚀🚀🚀. Whether in Yemen, in the drought-stricken countries of East Africa, in flooded areas or in the war-torn regions of Ukraine. The goal is as impressive as it is ambitious: zero hunger. 🙏 By 2030, there should be no hunger in the world.   Bernhard Kowatsch is the founder of  the Innovation Accelerator. The creative office is based in #Munich and in 2017 was named one of the 10 most innovative companies of the year by the renowned New York technology magazine Fast Company. At the time, he had already founded and successfully launched the @Share the Meal app. It all started in 2014, when he read that "it only costs 70 cents to feed a child in a crisis area for a day". To date, more than 150 million meals have been distributed through the app. 🙌 🙌 🙌   What did I take away from our conversation?   🌍 There are 828 million hungry people on the planet. With innovation and technology we can do a lot to help them.  🌍 Helping smallholder farmers, providing medicines, mother-child nutrition programmes, building schools, extending digital education to young people in crisis countries - there are lots of great ideas out there to help people survive. 🌍 Innovation is powerful when it creates impact. 🌍 Innovations must demonstrate that they solve a problem (needs-based approach). 🌍 Energy security is a relevant driver in the fight against hunger.   Bernhard, Regina and I have agreed to organize an exchange of expertise between our teams so that we can continue to learn from each other in the future. No more couch potato - WHO fitness survey: almost a third of people don't get enough exercise.   That's why we're organising our 3rd E.ON Group Innovation Step Challenge 2024 🏃♂️🏃♀️.In the tradition of Jules Verne we want to walk around the world in 80 days (50 Milion steps)!   Together with our E.ON colleagues from #sustainability and #strategy, we want to make it happen 💪. Mental and physical health are the precondition for creativity and performance. We are trying to achieve that in a fun setup with a little competition: The three best runners and the three best teams can look forward to great prizes. 🏆 Working together towards a common goal, strengthening and motivating each other as a team, gives me a lasting boost. Free Electrons Program is one of our major open innovation programs connecting us with our ecosystem, leveraging startup innovations and technology for and with E.ON's business units that solve significant business challenges. With our different experiences and frameworks from six global utilities, we benefit from our partnership to validate the applicability of innovative solutions in our markets for our customers.
