New paper published: How can regulation and reimbursement better accommodate flexible suites of Digital Health Technologies (DHTs)? In clinical practice, combining individual DHTs into comprehensive packages often proves beneficial for addressing specific medical needs. Examples include grouped devices for remote patient monitoring or so-called hospital-at-home concepts. These can comprise several different technologies such as health sensors, alert and monitoring systems, smart medication boxes and digital patient support. The flexible combination, however, currently poses major challenges for legislators and health technology assessment bodies in terms of reimbursement. In the second article of a two-part series published today in Nature Portfolio “npj Digital Medicine”, Rebecca Mathias and Stephen Gilbert together with Peter McCulloch and Anastasia Chalkidou propose dynamic, practical solutions for regulation and reimbursement of combined DHTs. They highlight the need for flexible evaluation frameworks that consider the interaction between different devices while finding a balance between safety and promotion of innovation. The aim should be digital transformation in medicine that meets societal needs, saves costs, is environmentally friendly and improves the overall quality of healthcare. New paper from the Kather Lab: How deep learning identifies key mutations in colorectal cancer for better treatment options 👏 Congratulations to Marco Gustav, Zunamys Carrero, PhD, Chiara M. L. Loeffler and the other authors from the Clinical AI group of Jakob Nikolas Kather on their recent publication “Deep learning for dual detection of microsatellite instability and POLE mutations in colorectal cancer histopathology” in the Nature Portfolio journal ‘npj Precision Oncology’. 🔬 Key Highlights:                                                                              The study explores how AI and deep learning can predict specific genetic subtypes of colorectal cancer directly from histopathology slides. The workflow identifies colorectal cancer patients who might respond to immunotherapy, including those with microsatellite instability and rare POLE mutations, by only predicting microsatellite status from routine histology slides. 🌟 Dresden Science Night: Exploring Medical Device Regulations and Bioelectronics 🌟 We had a great time at this year’s Dresden Science Night on Friday, June 14! With a diverse program that attracted 30,000 curious visitors to various scientific institutions in Dresden, the event was a real success. The EKFZ for Digital Health contributed with a stand in House 27 / DINZ at the Universitätsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus Dresden. Our teams, led by Professors Ivan Minev and Stephen Gilbert, showcased their research in bioelectronics and medical device regulation, like: 🤖 💪 🔬 Exploring Human-Machine Interfaces: Visitors tested a 3D-printed robotic arm and experienced bioelectrical signal detection and transmission using their own bodies. The team demonstrated their research on conductive hydrogels and explained how these materials could help to treat diseases and injuries of the central nervous system in the future. 🎲 🏃♀️ Medical Device Approval Process: An interactive game guided visitors through the journey of medical devices from lab to clinic, explaining the rigorous authorization process and the importance of safety and efficacy. Insights into the regulatory landscape for medical devices, including pacemakers and digital health apps, were shared.
