𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 With the ongoing new construction and major renovations worldwide, it is estimated that we will build the equivalent of a new New York City every month for the next 40 years! With such an immense challenge ahead, sustainable solutions in construction are more crucial than ever. One of our members, CarStorCon® Technologies, recently represented the European Biochar Industry Consortium (EBI) at the SUSTRACK project’s construction workshop, held online on July 10th. This event focused on supporting policymakers to replace fossil and carbon-intensive systems with sustainable circular and bio-based alternatives. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 Dedicated to the construction sector, this workshop is part of the “𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” series, organized under the SUSTRACK project to support policymakers in developing sustainable alternatives to fossil and carbon-intensive systems. The series gathers experts from the four most carbon-intensive sectors: textile, construction, plastics, and chemicals to present case studies and discuss pathways for a circular bio-based economy. 𝗘𝗕𝗜 𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆'𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 Yesterday in Berlin, EBI Board Chairman Hansjörg Lerchenmüller represented our consortium at a pivotal workshop dedicated to shaping Germany's Long-Term Negative Emissions Strategy (LNe). The German Energy Agency (dena) advised the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) on the development of the Long-Term Negative Emissions Strategy (LNe). The kickoff event gathered stakeholders from across the spectrum, including CDR companies, industry associations, environmental and nature conservation groups, and various government representatives. The focus of the first workshop was to lay down the foundational principles for an assessment methodology and to discuss initial evaluations. Johannes Förster, PhD from Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) introduced the assessment framework based on the green, red and yellow colour coding system developed within the CDRterra project. The framework from Förster et al., "A Comprehensive Assessment of Carbon Dioxide Removal Options for Germany" is published in Earth's Future journal. Following Förster's insightful presentation, DENA facilitated a discussion on the assessment framework and the evaluation of the criteria, engaging experts on CDR technologies and other stakeholders to share their perspectives. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 • Based on the framework of Förster et al., DENA developed a slightly simplified and concise assessment scheme, which nevertheless has a level of detail that allows for different technologies to be classified in a meaningful way. • Many arguments on the assessment of the individual technologies have already been exchanged at the workshop, but there will still be a lot of work for DENA and the stakeholder group to finalize the statement. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆'𝘀 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀. According to the Climate Protection Act, the government aims to set targets for technical carbon removal for the years 2035, 2040, and 2045, with the overarching objective of achieving net greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045 and negative greenhouse gas emissions post-2050. 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽: 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘁𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 Harald Bier, EBI Secretary General, delivered a presentation today at a workshop in Milan, organised by the University of Milan's Department of Environmental Science and Policy and the Department of Food, Environmental and Nutritional Sciences (DeFENS). 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, titled "The State of the Art of Biochar Industries and the Upcoming Policy Framework on Carbon Removal," Harald provided insights into the current status and prospects of Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) in the EU. 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 Emphasising the advancements in biochar durability, Harald stated we have come a long way from assessing bulk parameters like hydrogen-to-carbon ratios. “𝗡𝗼𝘄, 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿, 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝘀, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹”, 𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱. 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 By focusing on the measurement of the inert fraction of biochar, Harald maintained that researchers can now more accurately quantify long-term carbon removal. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 (𝗖𝗥𝗖𝗙), 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. This workshop underscored the importance of scientific evidence in shaping the CRCF. It also sparked critical discussions on biomass supply chains, biochar's emerging uses, and sustainable carbon removal mechanisms. Attendees delved into the challenges of quantifying and setting boundaries for carbon removals in Life Cycle Assessments (LCA). 🔥 🇩🇰 Breaking: Denmark introduces €100/t CO2 tax in agriculture AND invests €1.35b into biochar carbon removal 🇩🇰 🔥 😮 Huge news coming out of Denmark today: in a world-first, Denmark just passed a law that will impose a carbon tax on all its livestock emissions. In a smart move, Denmark simultaneously uses the proceeds to create the Green Area Fund to support farmers/industry with the transition. The details: ➡ Agriculture accounts for more than half of Denmark’s land use and around a third of the country’s carbon emissions.  ➡ The law will lead to CO2 reductions of 1.8Mt by 2030, with a potential of 2.6Mt ➡ It introduces a tax on livestock emissions of €40 (350 DKK) until 2030, going up to €100 (750 DKK) in 2035 ➡ It creates the Green Area Fund worth €5.35b (40b DKK) ➡ It sets aside €1.35b (10b DKK) specifically for biochar carbon removal (#BCR). I am told that the government is planning to subsidise BCR to the tune of up to €300/t. 🚜 This is nothing short of incredible. In an environment where farmers are protesting against climate action across Europe, Denmark has managed to get backing from key industry and environmental groups to pull this off. 🎯 It also represents - by far - the largest support for BCR I am aware of, likely turning Denmark into the epicenter of BCR globally. 💶 This news comes just a month after Denmark announced the award of $166m for 1.1Mt of CCS as part of its $370m BioCCS fund - see comments for background. 👏 Congrats to everyone involved, particularly Pyrolyse Danmark.
