Wildfires are one of the most pressing challenges in the fight against climate change. At Dryad Networks, we’re tackling this issue with IoT technology designed for ultra-early wildfire detection. 🌍🔥 Our CEO, Carsten Brinkschulte, recently spoke to Business Insider about how we developed Silvanet—an innovative solution using AI-powered sensors to detect fires in the smoldering phase before they become catastrophic. From overcoming technical challenges to building a scalable, solar-powered mesh network, this was no easy feat. But we’re driven by our mission to protect forests and reduce global CO2 emissions. Many thanks to Erin Greenawald for the chat. https://lnkd.in/ezwcQuBV #climatechange #greentech #sustainability #wildfireprevention #carbonreduction #climatetech #forestconservation #iot #ai #cleantech #environment #renewableenergy #solarpower #smarttechnology #wildfires #carbonemissions #forestmanagement #impactinvesting #techforgood #climateaction

Climate change and evolving land use patterns are increasing the threat of wildfires in the UK—a risk we can no longer afford to overlook. Warmer temperatures and prolonged dry spells make its landscapes more susceptible to fires, endangering communities, wildlife, and natural habitats. At Dryad Networks, we’re committed to protecting these precious resources. Our early detection system uses a network of highly sensitive gas sensors placed throughout forests to “sniff out” fires in their earliest stages. By identifying wildfires quickly, we can prevent small incidents from escalating into large-scale disasters. We are already working with the National Trust on a site in Marsden Moor in West Yorkshire, a vital habitat, home to rare ground-nesting birds, amphibians, and rich archaeological sites dating back to prehistoric times. It’s also under threat from wildfires, which can cause devastating damage to this fragile ecosystem and release significant amounts of carbon stored in deep peat layers. This pilot project combines sensor data with weather information and satellite imagery to provide near-real-time insights on wildfire risk to the ranger team at Marsden Moor. It’s the first time such technology is being used in this type of habitat under National Trust management. We believe that proactive measures and innovative technologies are essential to address the growing wildfire threat. Our collaboration with the National Trust represents a significant step forward in protecting the UK’s precious natural habitats. Here is an interesting one to start your week... How susceptible is the UK to the wildfires we have seen across Europe? In this viewpoint Carsten Brinkschulte of Dryad Networks explores this question and asks what is linked to climate change, what is linked to land use and how much of a role does human activity ultimately play? https://lnkd.in/dnW9P8KW #action #urgency #learnfromdoing #solutionsatscale #wildfires #climatechange #togetherwecan #unlocknetzero

Did you know that global wildfires released approximately 1,455 megatonnes (1.455 billion tonnes) of CO₂ into the atmosphere in 2022? According to the Copernicus ECMWF, while this is slightly lower than the record high in 2021, it highlights the substantial contribution of wildfires to global carbon emissions. Reducing wildfire emissions is essential in our fight against climate change. At Dryad Networks, our Silvanet solution provides ultra-early detection of wildfires, allowing for swift action to minimize their impact. Join us in making a difference. Climate change and land-use changes are driving an unprecedented increase in extreme wildfires. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the number of extreme wildfires is expected to rise by up to 14% by 2030, 30% by 2050, and a staggering 50% by 2100. At Dryad Networks, we believe that early detection is crucial to combating this growing threat. Our Silvanet system leverages advanced sensor technology to detect wildfires in their earliest stages, enabling rapid response and potentially preventing catastrophic damage. Let’s work together to protect our forests and communities.
