Milestones Achieved for the Reusability Flight Experiment ReFEx 🚀 After successful performed (pre) assembly integration and tests, the #ReFEx prime structure is now finalized by our institute. This includes advanced features such as the inner and outer thermal protection system, a wing folding system, and, for the first time, a three-split fairing to enable a symmetrical ascent configuration. Ongoing steps are the full integration of the final flight hardware like further flight instrumentation as well as the inner secondary structure combined with guidance navigation and control and avionics subsystems. In general, the two-staged #DCTA #VSB-30 sounding rocket accelerates ReFEx to an apogee of approx. 130 km to provide a down leg velocity of Mach 5. The flight experiment is scheduled 2026 together with range provider Southern Launch Ltd. in Koonibba, Australia. Once again, we would like to show you the versatile use of our gas gun facility 💥 The following slow-motion video covers the inside of a climate chamber housing. These housings were tested against hard body impact according to a standard for safety of machine tools. With the tests the penetration level of the enclosures was determined. The customers of the chambers can then safely operate them for high speed powertrain tests. The challenge for us was assuring repetitive testing with this projectile while the benefit was to extend both experimental and digital methods. We do impact safety testing of structures including energy storage systems. Testing comprises various projectiles like runway debris, gravel from track bed, birds and hail or customer defined objects. Thank you weisstechnik for letting us share this experience! 📹 Behind the scenes: A new little sneak peak from the film shoot last week Last week Wednesday we shot the second part of our film about the Urban Rescue project at our site in #Stuttgart. In this part, a coupon sample and an element sample of the future demonstrator were tested in our high-speed testing machine. We would like to thank langesicht | Filmproduktion for the excellent collaboration once again! We are already looking forward to the great result! 📢 We are looking for a student in engineering, natural sciences, or related fields (m/f/d) to explore the potential of bio-based composite materials as part of an internship or a thesis project. The research will compare these materials with the current state of the art and is carried out in conjunction with the BIOntier EU project, which promotes sustainable development in the aerospace sector. Bio-based materials are becoming increasingly important in the aerospace industry. However, much of the work so far has been theoretical, and there is a lack of practical experience in processing and applying these materials. Do you want to be part of this exciting research? We look forward to receiving your application! Second Part of Usability Studies for Aerospace Use Case in Project DrapeBot 🤖 In the EU-project DrapeBot, the final examination of the usability of the developed scenario in the context of human-machine collaboration took place last week at our technology testing cell in #Augsburg. Scientists from Aalborg University and DLR used two industrial robots to assist a group of 16 participants with different levels of technical experience tasked with manual draping of a long section of structural aircraft frame made from CFRP. First, the over four-meter-long cut-piece made out of dry carbon fibres was transferred to the mould by two collaborating industrial robots, which in the following also assisted the human worker during the draping process and provided neccessary amount of material on request by moving to positions closer to the mould’s surface. The communication between the controlling system and the worker was based on voice commands using a Large Language Model. The motions of the worker were monitored by motion trackers to analyze the evolvement of his trust towards the machines. The experience of the worker regarding the usability was assessed by questionnaires as last step. The targeted overall process includes the draping of shorter cut-pieces (40-200 cm) as well as quality assurance and cell logistics to cover a total of almost 30 plies for the entire component. The path planning of the robots is safely ensured for the worker by optical sensors and generated autonomously. In addition to the voice, gestures are also used to interact between the worker and the system. Heading towards the end of the project, a representative sequence of the process will be evaluated in terms of quality and efficiency in the final demonstration in November. The DRAPEBOT project runs within the EU funding programme HORIZON2020 from 01/2021 to 12/2024 under the funding number 101006732 (drapebot.eu) with the participation of project partners from Austria, Italy, Denmark and Germany.
