Is today's Microsoft and CrowdStrike outages a #cybersecurity wake-up call? If you were woken up this morning by your laptop's (almost unbearable) beeping rather than the alarm clock, you're not the only one. On July 19, 2024, a major outage hit Microsoft and CrowdStrike services, disrupting airlines, banks, and emergency services globally. What exactly happened? On July 18, BSOD errors on Windows devices were traced back to an issue with the CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor. This caused failures in Microsoft's Azure cloud services. Both companies are working to restore services. Some key takeaways for your business: 👉Complex interdependencies: Integrating multiple security tools can lead to unexpected failures. Carefully manage these to avoid issues like the BSOD incidents. 👉Operational risks: Third-party tools with deep IT access increase operational risks. Rigorous testing and contingency planning are essential here. 👉Data security: Security tools handling sensitive data are prime cyber attack targets. Ensure their security to maintain overall protection. 👉Regulatory compliance: Outages in the finance or healthcare sector can result in non-compliance with regulations like GDPR or ISO 27001, leading to legal issues and fines.
