Cyreen was founded in 2017 and is a German start-up specializing in the development of novel, highly effective retail media technologies for brick-and-mortar retailers and FMCG advertisers. We connect various data streams such as shopper-, media- and purchase data to generate impactful and data-driven insights. Thereby, we shed light on stationary stores with ad-impact, retail and customer behavior analytics to fuel profitability of retailers and ultimately, gain a better customer understanding in a fully GDPR-compliant way. C.A.P. (Connecting Ad-Impressions with Purchase) is our product: a data-based retail medium with integrated advertising impact technology. Intelligent screens seduce shoppers in supermarkets with the right ad at the right time. The technology establishes a new retail media standard as it provides proof that previous USPs of online media can be transferred in a simple, effective and efficient way for the offline advertising market. Based on our data-driven approach, offline campaigns become precisely measurable. The measurement methodology developed for C.A.P. and its data and consumer protection concept were also considered as groundbreaking by various industry experts - and has received both funding and an award from the EU Commission in 2021.

    It was a pleasure to be invited to #RetailInnovationDays2024 in #Heilbronn to showcase our technology and the data-driven benefits it can bring to physical retailers with real-life examples. ✨ Many thanks to our partner #ProGetränke Yannick Eberhardt for the great co-presentation and wonderful collaboration. 🙌 These two days were filled with exciting discussions and speeches, which inspired us at Cyreen to better assist our customers in personalized marketing using first-hand data collected in stores. Our innovative retail media solution, C.A.P. Explorer, further adds value in retail data analysis and forecasting. 📊 Data is becoming increasingly important in our digital world, especially in the retail sector. Almost all technology requires significant data analysis to provide valuable insights. However, managing the data generated daily across various channels and understanding its potential requires careful consideration and compliance with regulations. BCG’s analysis shows that retailers with a best-in-class loyalty program and personalized offers can increase revenue and profit by 3% to 5%. 📈 This data collection can unlock new business opportunities through retail media and data monetization.     Harvard Business Review recently published an article on "How Retailers Became Ad Platforms," by Sebastian Gabel, Artem Timoshenko and Duncan Simester. The article explores how retailers are transforming into advertising platforms, leveraging their extensive customer data to create new revenue streams. An important insight from the article: “Developing transparent reporting systems must also be a priority. Retailers need to be able to credibly measure the return on ad spending. This will require building experimentation capabilities into retail-media platforms.     What a great week! It started out great by having the privilege to present one of my research projects together with Dennis Herhausen, Dhruv Grewal and Cyreen about advertising effectiveness at the point of sale: a large-scale study of digital signage during the Marketing Strategy Advanced Track at the Doctoral Colloquium at The European Marketing Academy (EMAC) 2024 in Bucharest, Romania. It was awesome to meet and receive so many valuable feedback from a wonderful team of senior scholars: Kelly Hewett, Lopo Rego and Sundar Bharadwaj, and connecting with many fellow doctoral candidates with super interesting research presentations and discussions: Kiwoong Yoo, Musa Essa, Danial Hayati, Jan Kleinhans, Kerstin Mayer, Aadya Sanwal, and Ludovica Scalco. Additionally, I had the opportunity to also present our project in a special session on 'Marketing Mix Effectiveness in a Retail Setting' at the Annual EMAC conference following the Doctoral Colloquium. One key takeaway is the growing importance of incremental Return on Advertising Spend (iROAS) as a KPI for measuring the effectiveness of retail media campaigns. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 Retail media, with its access to vast amounts of first-party data, is uniquely positioned to address the challenge of measuring incremental success. As Tim Nedden of FrontRow explains, the ability to track and measure incremental purchases is crucial for understanding the true impact of advertising efforts. As Robert Jozic of Schwarz Media GmbH highlights, iROAS is becoming critical for measuring retail media performance. Schwarz Media’s loyalty app is a great example of how these KPIs can be effectively measured. "We often achieve an iROAS of 3 and more on our loyalty apps, even for brands with high media presence," says Jozic. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐲𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 With our unique data set of over 100 million tracked customer journeys, we've developed a broad range of KPIs specifically focused on in-store retail media impact. Through our partnership with leading academics, we have even gained the ability to calculate iROAS. According to the Horizont article, this robust metric allows for a precise understanding of ad effectiveness by comparing user groups exposed to ads versus those who aren't – which is at the base of our in-store retail media measurement technology. This comparison is the foundation of all of Cyreen's measurements and insights (see picture below). 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 To continue retail media’s dynamic growth, retailers must embrace and refine these measurement standards – specifically for the in-store world. The sector’s future lies in robust data analysis and meaningful KPIs.
