👋 Meet Dr Alan Humphries - a curator of Australian Pastures Greenbank, which maintains 85,000 packets of seeds from across the globe at the University of Adelaide's Waite Campus. Dr Humphries, a pre-breeding leader of the Crop Trust's #BOLDcwr alfalfa project, talks about the importance of seeds for the future. Our mission is to ensure the conservation and availability of crop diversity for food security worldwide.
Info
The Crop Trust is an international non-profit organization dedicated to conserving and making crop diversity available for use globally, forever and for the benefit of everyone. The fight to achieve food security and end hunger is one of the most defining issues of our times. Agriculture feeds our world, both people and the livestock that we raise. Yet, agriculture is under threat. Rising populations, diminishing resources and deteriorating environments are all raising the stakes. We will need 50% more food on the table by 2050, and producing this food has never been more challenging. Within the plant diversity, we can find the characteristics that will adapt and improve our food crops and allow farmers to feed the world – come what may. But this diversity is not endless. It is disappearing, and once lost, it’s lost forever. Conserving and making this diversity available in genebanks worldwide ensures a food supply at more stable prices and provides the raw material breeders and farmers will need to grow a more nutritious, affordable and varied food supply. This is the Crop Trust’s mission.

Wheat is the world's most widely grown crop, but traditional breeding methods can't keep up with climate change. Wheat science urgently requires more investments in genetic studies of wild relatives, utilizing next-generation breeding tools. #BOLDcwr

Meet #barley - a vital crop domesticated 10,000 years ago. Once a staple for Roman gladiators, it remains a resilient fighter, thriving in the harshest climates and supporting small farmers in drylands. With the help of ancient genes, breeders are creating new, stronger varieties to withstand even tougher conditions. As climate change intensifies, barley stands ready to lend its strength to farmers and communities in need. What an incredible turnout at the #FoodForever Experience in NYC! In partnership with Chefs Manifesto, the event highlighted underutilized and neglected crops through a creative and delicious menu. As our Executive Director Stefan S. noted, "These crops were once vital sources of food and nutrition, but have been forgotten. With Food Forever Experience, we aim to showcase their importance in improving food diversity and global nutrition." A big thank you to chefs Erik Oberholtzer, José Luis Chavez, Natacha Gomez Dupuy, and Kristen Little Espinal for crafting dishes that tell the powerful story of #cropdiversity and its role in building resilient #foodsystems.
