🤝 Best solutions come from collaboration. That's why we teamed up with farmers, agronomists and scientists around the world to develop the 𝗰&𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗯𝗼𝘅 for climate-smart coffee production. The result are tailored tools related to region-specific needs: www.toolbox.coffee “Something that was important for us from the beginning was the collaborative aspect. The c&c toolbox was really a joint work and effort of colleagues and experts from all countries in which coffee&climate is active.” says Anika Nicolaudius, c&c toolbox Expert. “We started the process by discussing what needed to be considered and which features will be required. We then drafted the tools based on field reports and case studies, backed up by manuals and common guidelines. 🌱🌍 coffee&climate Community Meeting at UFLA: Creating the Ideal Landscape for Coffee Production ☕ On September 12th, Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung - HRNS do Brasil hosted the coffee&climate Community of Practice Meeting at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA). The event brought together 44 participants, including coffee producers, researchers, students, traders, and organizations from the coffee industry. The main topic was: "What is the ideal landscape for coffee production?", with a focus on sustainable solutions to adapt to climate change. 🔑 Here are the key moments from the event: ☕ Regenerative Coffee Production for a Low-Carbon Future Speaker: Marina Scalioni Vilela, agronomist and PhD candidate. Marina talked about how to improve soil health and lower carbon emissions in coffee farming. She explained how regenerative farming practices can help build a more sustainable future for coffee. 🌿 Adapting to Climate Change at Fazenda Samambaia Speaker: Daniela Teixeira, operations manager at Fazenda Samambaia. Daniela shared real-life examples from her farm, showing what changes they’ve made to adapt to climate change and ensure coffee production remains strong. 🗣️ Group Discussions: Participants were divided into groups to discuss their ideas of the "ideal landscape" for coffee farming. Their insights will be put together in a document to help guide the coffee industry toward more sustainable practices. 📱 Digital tools are playing an increasingly important role in coffee farming. This is why the 𝗰&𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗯𝗼𝘅 has been developed as an interactive web app that can be accessed via smartphone, tablet, and laptop, even in low-bandwidth areas: www.toolbox.coffee The climate-smart coffee practices come in the form of easy-to-use step-by-step instructions.   “Farming communities have increased access to digital tools”, says c&c Climate Change Coordinator Victor Komakech at Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung - HRNS Uganda. “We are working with a lot of young people who want to do farming as a business, and they are also very interested in using digital tools. Fish scale biochar to improve the soil structure. 🐟⚫ Biochar production from wood or coffee husks is a climate-smart practice. Applied to the soil of the coffee field, biochar serves as a soil conditioner enhancing its structure and fertility. In Cana Verde, Minas Gerais, Brazil, farmers learned about an amazing innovation: Biochar production from fish scales! Advantages of fish scale biochar:   🌱 Rich in calcium and phosphorus, which are essential nutrients for plant growth.   💧 Fish scales contain collagen, which when decomposed in the soil, helps improve structure and water retention. In general, the use of agricultural waste (coffee husks) and fish waste (fish scales) for the production of biochar promotes the circular economy, reducing waste and the environmental impacts associated with the disposal of these materials. 🔝
