The Battery Pass project have published an insightful study on 'Unlocking the Value of the EU Battery Passport’, with practical next steps for businesses to maximise their strategic potential. As the technology lead for the Project and our work implementing Battery Passports at production scale, Circulor was glad to contribute to this report. Volvo Cars continue to show leadership! Further to their battery passport milestone in June 2024, they are also leading the way in emissions reduction, according to recent analysis by The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). In the study on 2025 CO2 targets for new passenger cars in Europe, Volvo Cars stands out as having already achieved CO2 emissions levels that already meet 2025 targets, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. For other manufacturers, the ICCT study highlights that they will need to raise their battery electric vehicle (BEV) share by up to 12 percentage points on average to reach 2025 CO2 targets, increasing from about 16% in 2023 to approximately 28% by 2025. The European Commission is gathering feedback on the proposed calculations for recycling efficiency and material recovery rates of waste batteries, which underscores the need for transparency to support the circular economy and ensure a level playing field between recyclers. Battery passports offer this transparency –facilitating fast and effective pathways to recycling, and primary data about the battery’s raw materials origin, components, and lifecycle to do this safely and efficiently.
