Focus on circular economy at the 9th Forum for Green Development in Shanghai! Our co-founder Susanne Kadner, presented on our current efforts on building a circular ecosystem for traction batteries and provided a deep dive on the Battery Pass project she initiated at acatech at the 9th Forum for Green Development in Shanghai. Coordinated by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the forum’s theme focused on “The Digital Circular Economy”. Here are some key takeaways: ➡ 🇨🇳 & 🇪🇺 recognize the circular economy's potential for GHG reduction. ➡ China has integrated concrete targets into its 14th 5 year plan but detailed strategies to clearly guide business decisions are still missing. ➡ The Sino-German Action Plan on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, agreed during Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke’s visit in Bejing in April, can provide interesting opportunities. ➡ The circular transition comes with interesting business opportunities and digital technologies are key for leveraging them. Interesting examples are ATRenew Inc. with their automated, big data based return solution or Intco Plastics with their fully digitized supply chains. ➡ Standards are crucial for a successful circular economy. However, there was a distinct concern by the Chinese interlocutors that the strong push of the EU Commission to make digital product passports mandatory gives little time to discuss the required technical standards. ➡ The massive opportunities of a digitally enabled Circular Economy are evident and taken up by Chinese companies. Nevertheless, business and academia on both sides share concerns regarding the protection of IP relevant information and the urgent need to address the issue of standardization. We are looking forward on finding joint and timely solutions. ⚡ Can we transform towards a sustainable society and economy? Does it require gentle reforms or radical ideas? And who will pay for it? These were the guiding questions at this year's Süddeutsche Zeitung Sustainability Summit, held yesterday and today at the Munich Urban Colab under the motto: 🌄 "Now more than ever: How a sustainable world is created". The summit offered a wide range of perspectives from science, business, politics and society with top-class speakers. Peter Weber, Leiter BMW Group Werk München made clear what it means in concrete terms to transform the economy. He explained how the conversion of the Munich BMW plant, where 1,000 vehicles roll off the assembly line every day and 1,200 employees work, is being organized in the midst of production operations. From the end of 2027, only fully electric vehicles will be produced here. Dr. Kiri Trier, Sustainability General Managerin und Executive Board Member L'Oréal DACH at L'Oréal Groupe, presented that they will not only roll out a refill program in November, but that up to 50% of packaging will be bio-based by 2030. To achieve this goal, L'Oréal is working with various start-ups and explores new materials.
