🧠 🎉 Launching the Global Brain Health Partnership! 🎉🧠 🌍 Did you know that neurological disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide? Over 3 billion people are affected, with more than 80% of neurological deaths and health loss occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The celebrations of Brain Awareness Month in June and World Brain Day in July remind us of the critical importance of addressing these growing challenges. We must prioritize promoting equitable Brain Health across different countries and within disadvantaged populations. 🎊 The Global Brain Health Unit within the Department of Neurology and attached to the Center for Global Health (CGH) at TUM (Technical University of Munich) and the Harvard Program in Global Surgery and Social Change within the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School are delighted to announce the launch of The Global Brain Health Partnership. This partnership will advance the implementation of evidence-based Brain Health interventions and promote Brain Health equity. 🌐 Our partnership includes specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, public health, and implementation science, amongst others. Our team is not only diverse, but also deeply committed to advancing Brain Health. We aim to establish a global platform to encourage collaboration in implementing evidence-based Brain Health interventions and sharing best practices worldwide, focusing on LMICs. National and global implementation of action plans, like the World Health Organization Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders (2022 – 2031) (IGAP), must be strongly supported through country implementation. This collective effort requires the support of all stakeholders, including a clear role for research institutions in implementation research, including testing optimal implementation pathways and documenting the impact on Brain Health. 🔜 Stay tuned for further announcements and initiatives as we work together to make a global impact on Brain Health! #GlobalHealth #BrainHealth #Partnership #Neurology #PublicHealth #HealthEquity #GlobalPartnership #MedicalResearch

🌍 Recap Global Health Talk Series! 🌏 🎙 Thank you to everyone who joined us online for our latest Global Health Talk! We were honoured to host John Amuasi, who delivered his insightful talk on “Research in Ghana: Introducing the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR).” Dr. Amuasi began by emphasizing the significance of collaboration in advancing Global health Initiatives. He highlighted Ghana's remarkable achievements, including being the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence, and shared its rich history of health research. The session provided a comprehensive overview of research centers across Ghana, with a focus on the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR). Dr. Amuasi took us on a “virtual tour” of the center, discussing its objectives and current projects, showcasing their crucial contributions to combating various diseases. Projects Overview:  -ALERTT: A multidisciplinary consortium building a patient-centered clinical research network to respond to epidemics across Sub-Saharan Africa. - Snake Bite Project: Aimed at establishing a more accurate estimate of the national burden of snakebite envenoming. - WHO AMR Assessment: Evaluating data on antimicrobial resistance pathogens among farm animals and along the food chain using a One Health perspective. - Malaria Birth Cohort: Investigating the impact of placental malaria on mental and physical development in early life, this study aims to understand immunity development against malaria, considering parasite, human, and socioeconomic factors. Dr. Amuasi also highlighted the often-overlooked connection between non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and communicable diseases, noting that current research merely scratches the surface. During the Q&A session, when asked whether he labels his research as Global Health or an integration of "basic science research" with Global Health, Dr. Amuasi responded, "It's deep and genomic work, but it is Global Health Work," emphasizing the complexity of Global Health. 🔜 We look forward to resuming our series with more enlightening sessions after the summer break! 💡 Register for updates on our upcoming sessions here: https://lnkd.in/eC_HW-mi #GlobalHealth #TropicalMedicine #Webinar

🧠 World Brain Day 2024: A Call to Action for Brain Health 🧠 On July 22, the World Federation Of Neurology celebrates World Brain Day, aiming to raise awareness about neurological disorders and promote brain health worldwide. The Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 reveals that neurological conditions are now the leading cause of disability globally, with a new spectrum of disorders emerging. This highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to brain health, focusing on prevention as a key strategy. Sarbani Chakraborty underscores the critical connections between mental health, neurological health, and both communicable and non-communicable diseases, but also its connection with human capital development, poverty alleviation, and advancing universal health coverage. She emphasizes the importance of integrating brain health into health systems systematically. Key risk factors—such as tobacco and alcohol use, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, social isolation, air pollution, and social determinants of health—must be addressed collectively to enhance global health and well-being. Prof. Dr. Dr. Andrea S. Winkler calls for greater investment in brain health, noting that over 40% of the population currently suffers from one or more neurological disorders. She asserts that brain health matters across all life stages, cultures, geographies, and economies. Brain health encompasses more than the absence of disease; it includes overall brain well-being! Action is needed now! Dr. Chakraborty is excited about translating existing risk factor modification and treatment knowledge into scalable policies and programs, especially in low- and middle-income countries. With the 2025 UN High-Level Meetings on NCDs approaching, the Center for Global Health (CGH) community has much to contribute to the global brain health discourse. 🔜 We look forward to advancing global brain health through collaborative efforts and sharing upcoming news on our Global Brain Health Partnership Launch. #WorldBrainDay #BrainHealth #GlobalHealth #Neurology #MentalHealth #Prevention #PublicHealth #CGH
