CDP is proud to have supported the development of Nature Positive for Climate Action publication, providing a series of case studies which demonstrate how ambitious investors are using to CDP data to push forward corporate action on nature and climate. Ahead of #COP16, this is a timely reminder of the need to move away from the siloing of climate and nature. The return on investment is far greater by understanding and managing climate and nature together – your priority impacts – rather than separately. CDP is supporting this through our new corporate questionnaire, bringing the issues of relevance together to surface the most robust, meaningful data to drive the right action.

🌎 Deforestation and ecosystem conversion driven by cattle and soy supply chains remain significant threats, especially in South America. The rising demand for beef and soy has led to land-use changes in critical ecosystems like the Amazon, Cerrado, and Pampas.   A few key players—JBS, Marfrig, Minerva, ADM, Bunge, and Cargill—dominate the market, giving them the power to lead the shift toward sustainable, deforestation- and conversion-free (DCF) supply chains. However, progress has been slow, with many businesses still relying on outdated, harmful practices.   To achieve global climate goals and ensure long-term financial stability, these companies must take bold action. Setting ambitious DCF targets, collaborating with supply chains, aligning with new regulations, and transparently improving sustainability performance are all critical steps. Our latest fact sheet provides an update on the progress of eight cattle and soy traders between 2020 and 2023 in eradicating deforestation, conversion, and human rights abuses from their sourcing practices.   Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eKFDV_Qd #DeforestationFree #ClimateAction #Deforestation #ClimateGoals

CDP's Head of Disclosure, Europe Ariane Coulombe shared insights from last week at Impact Day in Tallinn on how industry can lead the way toward decarbonization - underpinned by comprehensive and actionable data.

Head of Disclosure, Europe @ CDP

Tere Tallin! 🇪🇪 Great time at Impact Day discussing which industries can lead the way towards decarbonization. The answer: Everyone plays a role, but where a euro spent equals an exponential decrease in emissions is a great place to start. For industry to make a lasting change, we need an environment that enables the change. That means empowering regulation that doesn’t decrease ambition and punish first movers, access to capital for the transition, and real use cases for impact. 1/3 of European companies cite access to capital as an impediment to their decarbonization efforts! Long term impact needs smart financing. And what underpins all of this is comparable and actionable data. So investors can understand how their investments contribute to sustainable activities, so companies can make use cases for how decarbonization doesn’t mean decreasing profits. In the end, data is evidence. It’s proof that decarbonization and sustainability doesn’t go against competitiveness - and makes a case for it! Thanks to Peep, Jüri, and Vitalija for a great panel. On a separate note - I was so impressed to see how digital Estonia is (coming from a place like Germany 🫣…..). The longest part of founding a company in Estonia? Choosing a name. Taxes done straight from your phone. Incredible to see, also how this innovative thinking is applied to sustainability and the road to net zero. Very inspiring.

CDP data shows a worrying lack of disclosure and action on nature, with too many big banks (Global Systemically Important Banks – or GSIBs) continuing to look at climate in a silo. Of 29 GSIBs, less than half have policies to address forest considerations. More often than not, these banks do not disclose any engagement on nature-related issues. Policy intervention is critical. At #COP16, national governments must be shown the evidence and encouraged to develop and enforce global standards for environmental risk management for G-SIBs, facilitate international cooperation for consistent application of these standards, and promote research and development to enhance environmental risk assessment and mitigation. Asia's rich biodiversity is under threat, yet it offers immense potential for developing NbS to combat climate change and drive economic growth. While these solutions are promising, significant challenges hinder their implementation, particularly in securing adequate financing. Public funds dominate, but private capital still flows heavily towards environmentally damaging sectors. To bridge the financing gap and achieve ambitious restoration goals, financial institutions need to redirect investments towards NbS. Our latest report, “Nurturing Nature: De-risking Nature-based Finance in Asia” delves into the state of financial institutions’ actions in catalysing innovative instruments for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in Asia. This study analysed the challenges to significantly increase nature-based financing, case studies of de-risking instruments across types of financial institutions, and corresponding calls to action for financial institutions to bridge the funding gap for NbS. Key challenges impede their adoption: ➡️Measuring and validating positive impacts, such as improved ecosystem services prove challenging; ➡️Small investment sizes, failure to reach commercial viability, and long payback periods further deter private capital; ➡️Legal complexities around land rights issues and lack of regional binding policy hinder private sector intervention.
