Based on a principle older than the dinosaurs and potentially removing up to 100,000,000,000 (one hundred billion) tonnes of carbon permanently in the next 50 years - Enhanced Weathering might be the next big thing in durable carbon removal! How does it work❓    1️⃣ The process starts with natural rocks, such as basalt or olivine, or alkaline industrial byproducts, such as concrete or steel slag. These materials naturally react with CO2, but very slowly. Crushing them into fine particles increases their surface area and speeds up the reaction. 2️⃣ The rock dust is then spread over large areas of land. When it rains, it reacts with carbon from the atmosphere and forms dissolved bicarbonates, trapping the carbon in a stable form. 🌾 Beyond carbon removal, spreading finely ground rock dust on farmland can improve soil health: It raises soil pH, releases essential nutrients, boosts plant resistance, and increases crop productivity.   3️⃣ Over time, the dissolved bicarbonates that have been formed are gradually washed into rivers and oceans, resulting in carbon storage for thousands of years. The mineral weathering and precipitation process into dissolved organic carbon is well studied. By addressing some of the remaining challenges in measurability and sustainability, we can unlock the large-scale deployment of enhanced weathering. 📊 Measurability: Factors like soil pH, temperature, weather conditions, and farming practices can influence the rate of weathering, highlighting the need for precise methods to measure the amount of carbon captured in the process. 🌏 Sustainability: Mining activities and transportation from quarries to processing or application sites may pose sustainability challenges for enhanced weathering projects. However: Using mining waste and locally available residual materials can reduce associated transport costs and emissions and provide an opportunity to implement circular economy solutions. 🔎 EW shows great potential to become a significant durable carbon removal technology in the coming years. Research by Beerling et al suggests that it could capture 25 to 100 gigatonnes of carbon in 50 years. More than 20 companies across six continents are already deploying pilot projects on land, with plans to scale up operations in the near term. Quantification methodologies to account for carbon removal are being proposed, paving the way for third-party certified carbon removal credits from enhanced weathering projects.    Want to learn more about durable carbon removal? A single carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) technology is delivering the vast majority - 91% in Q1 2024 - of all durable carbon removal today: While it might look inconspicuous at first glance, the black, charcoal-like, carbon-rich substance known as biochar is a potent CDR technology delivering immediate climate impact with many co-benefits. How does Biochar Carbon Removal (#BCR) work❓ 1️⃣ It all starts with biomass, sourced from unused or residual organic materials. This biomass contains carbon, which plants naturally absorb from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. 2️⃣ In a process called pyrolysis, this biomass is heated to high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment. Unlike traditional burning, where the carbon in the biomass escapes back into the atmosphere, the pyrolysis process captures the carbon within the stable structure of the final product: biochar. ⚡ Even better: Pyrolysis plants also generate heat, electricity, or biogas as byproducts, providing renewable energy that can be used for the process itself or supplied to local energy grids. 3️⃣ Now that the carbon has been captured in a stable form, it’s all about how the biochar is used to ensure long-term carbon storage. 🌾 When biochar is applied to soil in agricultural settings for example, it provides durable carbon storage, while also enhancing soil fertility and water retention. The carbon in biochar is highly stable and can remain in the soil for hundreds to thousands of years. 🏗️ In the construction industry, biochar can be added to durable building materials such as concrete, bricks, or asphalt, providing both structural benefits and long-term carbon storage. Astonishingly, adding just 1% by mass of biochar to concrete mixes could sequester 0.5 gigatonnes of CO2 annually and decrease the greenhouse gas footprint of cement-based industries by 20%. 🔎 The Mercator Research Institute estimates that BCR could remove 0.5 to 2 gigatonnes (Gt) of CO2 every year, making it a key CDR solution to address climate change. According to CDR.fyi, 94% of durable CDR deliveries in 2023 came from BCR projects. For companies who are looking for effective and reliable solutions to address the climate crisis today, BCR is among the few readily scalable solutions delivering immediate climate impact. Carbon Dioxide Removal (#CDR) is an essential puzzle piece for reaching net zero and mitigating the climate crisis 🌍 Despite more than 96% of global greenhouse gas emissions coming from countries that have pledged climate action, our current trajectory is still significantly falling behind the efforts needed to reach the 1.5°C target established by the Paris Agreement. A recent study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) highlights that ramping up global CDR volume to at least 4.5-9 gigatonnes annually by 2050 will be necessary to limit global warming to below 2°C or 1.5°C, respectively. CDR is essential for reversing and stabilizing atmospheric CO2 levels, significantly mitigating the impacts of global warming, and supporting ambitious net-zero goals. Durable carbon removal can help address residual emissions from hard-to-abate sectors like steel, cement, and chemicals, and clean up historical emissions to prevent their continued effect on global warming. Understanding and integrating CDR into our sustainability and net-zero strategies is vital for a sustainable future. Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR): Europe's Path to a Trillion-Euro Industry CDR could become a game-changer in addressing climate change! The recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study with Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) “Carbon Dioxide Removal: Europe and Germany's Role in Catalyzing a Trillion-Euro Industry” explores the transformative impact #CDR could have on achieving our climate goals while fostering economic growth. 🌿 The key role of CDR in achieving net zero: Beyond inevitable reduction measures, CDR is an essential part of our ambition to keep the goal of the Paris Agreement within reach by compensating for residual emissions from hard-to-abate sectors like cement, steel, or chemicals or emissions we have historically emitted. 📈 Economic boom: CDR's economic potential could reach €470-940B annually by 2050 – this is at par with today’s global airline industry. Europe's (Germany's) CDR industry could reach €220B (€70B) per year by then, driven especially by technological advancements and economies of scale. 👷♂️ Job potential: The European (German) CDR industry could create up to 670K (190K) jobs. 🌍 Europe paves the way: With its tech expertise and climate policies, Europe, especially Germany, is set to have a significant impact on the CDR market. However, bold actions from policymakers, the CDR industry, CDR buyers, and investors are necessary to unlock CDR’s full potential. 💥🪨 Paving the way for Enhanced Weathering (#EW) in the European Union 🪨💥 On Tuesday, the Enhanced Weathering Alliance (EWA) held its inaugural assembly in Brussels, meeting with policy makers, NGOs, and - crucially - with each other. 🎯 Our objective is clear: establish EW as one of the most viable paths to reach net-zero in Europe (and beyond). How? Primarily by getting the European Commission to prioritise the development of an EW methodology within the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (#CRCF), ideally starting in 2024 and not late 2025. Why? Here's a reminder on just how awesome EW is: 😯 In 2023, EW removed 30,000t of CO2. EWA members alone deployed rock that will sequester 100Kt in 2023 and aim to remove up to 2.5Mt by 2026. 💸 EW has a clear path to $100/t. Currently, prices are inflated given the massive investments into monitoring, reporting, and verification (#MRV). Once we feel comfortable moving to model-based MRV, costs will drop massively. 🚜 EW can replace lime, a well-established process used by farmers to manage pH levels (30Mt/year in the U.S. alone), providing farmers with a potential revenue stream and a much-needed path for agriculture to reach net-zero. 📈 EW’s scaleability is huge, given it builds on the foundations of one of the world’s largest industries: mining, which produces almost 9Gt (!!!) of tailings annually, much of which can be used for EW. 🔒 EW is permanent for tens of thousands of years. 🤝 Intrigued? Get in touch with us today and join the 17 companies that have already teamed up to drive the scale-up of enhanced weathering. 😍 On a personal note, this is a huge moment of pride for me: Carbonfuture has been trying to mobilise the EW community for a long time. A year ago, I teamed up with Adam Wolf (Eion) and Matthew Clarkson, PhD (InPlanet) alongside Antonio Astolfi and Julian Jacobitz (FGS Global) to increase the momentum. Then earlier this year we were finally able to launch Enhanced Weathering Alliance (EWA). 🙏 Thank you to all the members who joined us on Tuesday: Hara Wang Rachel S. Isabella Corpora Charlie Hendry-Smith, Tony Oehm, Jonte Boysen, Silyan Ivanov, Simon Manley, Sam Davies, Eliot Booth, as well as all the EWA members who were with us in spirit. 🔗 Want to find out more about the potential of EW for climate policy? Check out this excellent EW Policy Primer by the Carbon Business Council: https://lnkd.in/dqPdNVX3 🤘 Time to rock! #carbonremoval #enhancedweathering #netzero
