Cotton is innovative - cotton as a source of protein 🏆Just recently, researcher Dr. David Fang, Agricultural Research Service U.S. Department of Agriculture, received the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) Researcher of the Year award for breeding a cotton variety that contains low levels of gossypol.   Gossypol is incompatible with humans, so the protein-rich seeds cannot be used for human consumption yet. Assuming that an average annual production of 25 million tonnes of fibre results in more than 40 million tonnes of seeds, this is a huge potential source of plant protein. 💡   #cotton #cottonisinnovative #innovation https://lnkd.in/eqDyep_p

📣 Marketing #Cotton: Challenges and Opportunities In his presentation during the International Cotton Conference Bremen in March 2024, Mark Messura, Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain Marketing Division of Cotton Incorporated, focused on the demand side of cotton and how to support the marketing of the natural fibre to get used in specific products. All farmers in the world share a concern for demand at the product level. About 80% of all cotton is used in apparel, 10-15% in household textiles, and the balance in non-woven or technical applications. Mark also presented some solutions developed by Cotton Inc – an idea company focused on the mission of advancing demand for cotton. 📉 Bremen Cotton Market: Nearest Future Recorded New Low   Firstly, the ICE Cotton No. 2 futures decreased during the reporting period. Then, they recovered considerably, before experiencing a rapid drop. Recording just over 68 ct/lb for a short time, the Nearest Future July reached a low that had not been seen since October 2020. The July-December divergence widened with that price decline but converged again and remained at a stable level towards the end of the reporting period. The rapid decline may have been caused by the surprisingly positive report on cotton plantings from the US Department of Agriculture. Demand continued to fall short of expectations. Rather speculative than fundamental causes have driven the price trend. Furthermore, the weather conditions have played a greater role than demand. Physical quotations rather oriented towards cost factors in production than to speculation. The European market remained largely quiet due to the upcoming vacation season.
