BalticMUPPETS were happy to be contacted by Niclas Riecken to give some input on innovation using #BalticSea #bluemussels. 🙌 Grobruket ABs developments of #fertilisers / soil improvement made it to the list! Soon we will also have available pet food products on the market to brag about... #i3instrument European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) #musselinnovation #sustainableaquaculture #lowtrophic
Mussels are essential for rejuvenating aquatic ecosystems, enhancing water quality, and increasing biodiversity. Our aquaculture intelligence, authored by project analyst, Niclas Riecken, delves into innovations and opportunities despite the sector's challenges🦪 The European mussel industry's production experienced a decline- where it dropped from over 600,000 tonnes in the late 1990s to 431,000 tonnes by 2022 due to diseases, environmental factors, and economic pressures. 📉 Despite the decline, the sector remains vital for regional development, contributing direct employment and supporting tourism and regional gastronomy. Hatch Innovation Services identifies potential in genetic improvements, advanced farming technologies, and new mussel-derived products. 🔬 Here are some pathways for innovations: 🌱 Climate-resilient hatcheries: developing methods for spat production that can adapt to changing climate conditions, a case study is the use of selective breeding techniques to enhance spat quality. ♻️ Circular economy solutions: the circular economy is transforming the European mussel industry by turning waste into valuable resources. 🌍 Mussel shells can be used for high-value applications, including calcium carbonate extraction🏗️ The natural fiber byssus, used by mussels to attach to surfaces, is being developed into durable, eco-friendly textiles and insulation materials. 👕 Non-marketable mussel meat is being utilized in several ways: nutraceuticals 💊, pet food 🐾, and value-added foods 🍔 At Hatch Blue, we believe that driving growth requires innovations, collaboration, and insights. For commercial success in the mussel industry, stakeholders must work together, support research, improve market access, and invest in sustainable practices.
