In May 1998, Aspen Institute Germany convened a second pivotal gathering in Warsaw, Poland, to discuss the future of Europe. The focus was on the historic eastward enlargement of the European Union, exploring both the opportunities and challenges this expansion would bring. A highlight of the event was an insightful dinner talk by Hanna Suchocka, then Minister of Justice of Poland, who addressed "The Acquis Communautaire and Poland's Entry into the European Union." During the event, Hanna Suchocka and Steffen Sachs, then Deputy Director of the Aspen Institute, engaged in meaningful discussions about the path forward for Poland and other candidate countries. This dialogue, held in collaboration with the Dräger Stiftung, focused on the crucial steps and considerations for joining the EU. The study group, meeting from May 13-17, 1998, provided a platform for thought leaders to debate and shape the trajectory of Europe's integration. Stone, a visionary who believed the future of the Federal Republic and Berlin were intertwined, predicted the Wall's fall through the power of the people, not war. His presence in Berlin during this monumental event underscored his lifelong commitment to freedom and unity.
