Boosting support for renewable energy development in Southeast Asia can make electricity both cleaner and more affordable. The priority should be expanding wind and solar PV, along with building essential infrastructure such as grids. More renewable energy sources are not only crucial for electricity but also form the foundation for producing cost-effective hydrogen for industrial use. Read here the key insights from our hydrogen expert, Fabian Barrera, shared during his panel discussion at the 7th Indonesia Energy Transition Dialogue held yesterday in Jakarta, Indonesia. #hydrogen #renewablehydrogen #renewables #netzero
The clean energy transition forges forward despite recent developments. This week, I joined the 7th Indonesia Energy Transition Dialogue. This was my first visit to Jakarta, and it was truly enlightening. I would like to thank the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) for inviting Agora Industry and Agora Energiewende to share insights on accelerating the green hydrogen economy at this important event. The main message of my presentation was that clean hydrogen is essential for decarbonising applications in the chemical and steel industry, as well as aviation and shipping, which cannot be electrified. Therefore, hydrogen should be reserved exclusively for such no-regret applications. Such targeted use of clean hydrogen would allow the growing industrial sector in Southeast Asia to drive growth and achieve low-carbon development while bringing important socio-economic benefits to the countries. We discussed how Indonesia's chemical sector can be a low-hanging fruit for the production of renewable ammonia, methanol and fertiliser. To make renewable hydrogen more competitive and ensure affordable electricity to all, investing in renewable energy must be a key priority, not only in Indonesia but throughout Southeast Asia. If you want to dive into Agora Industry’s work on hydrogen, you can read more in our recent publication “9 Insights on Hydrogen - Southeast Asia Version” here: https://lnkd.in/emW2h9Ux I am very pleased that I was given the opportunity to contribute to this discussion and want to thank all panelists from the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of Indonesia and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) for the fruitful discussion. #hydrogen #cleanhydrogen #renewables #netzero #southeastasia #industry #IETD2024
