Frauke Thies, Executive Director of the Agora Think Tanks, visited our Beijing and Bangkok office last week. Starting the trip in China, on August 20, Frauke Thies joined the Riverside Energy Club, an event format established by Agora's Team China with the aim to connect young professionals working on the energy transition in China. This time, the event focused on the prospects of green careers. As Frauke Thies has held different positions spanning from civil society organisations, business associations and philanthropy to now the Executive Director of Agora, she shared her experiences about the decisive milestones of her own career path. Frauke and the 50 students, young and mid-level professionals exchanged on female leadership, guidance from supervisors, networking, transitioning between jobs and more. With panel and group discussions, the event marked a very open dialogue on the various career paths possible around the energy transition. Digital technologies will be crucial in advancing Southeast Asia's energy transition toward greater use of renewable energy. It was a pleasure to talk at this year’s Techsauce Global Summit 2024, where experts from various industries gathered to discuss how cutting-edge technologies and digitalisation are tackling climate issues. Representing Agora Energiewende as an international think tank at this panel, I had the opportunity to present key online tools such as the “Agorameter”, which provides real-time and hourly-basis data on Germany’s electricity generation, and Agora Industry's Global Steel Transformation Tracker, which monitors technology adoption, energy use, and emission in steel production—crucial for developing strategies to mitigate industrial emissions. Together with other experts we highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration, emphasising the need to combine diverse expertise to foster mutual benefits and innovation in the energy sector and beyond. One of the critical takeaways from the panel was the need for an enabling regulatory environment that bridges the gap between innovation and practical implementation, ensuring climate tech solutions can thrive in the marketplace. A big thank you to TechSauce for organizing such an inspiring panel, and to the panelists and all participants for the engaging discussions and valuable insights.

Data-driven modelling and visualisations are critical to driving the energy transition forward as they provide clear, evidence-based insights that can inform decision-making and ambitious policy recommendations. To support energy professionals from around the globe in these skills, Agora Energiewende’s Energy Data and Modelling team collaborated with theInternational Network of Energy Transition Think Tanks (INETTT) and INETTT’s Turkish partner think tank SHURA Enerji Dönüşümü Merkezi / Energy Transition Center for the first Energy System Analytics Training, which took place in Istanbul. Last month, participants from 12 countries across the globe gathered in Istanbul for INETTT’s first ever 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. 📊 Hosted by INETTT member and local think tank SHURA Enerji Dönüşümü Merkezi / Energy Transition Center and in collaboration with Agora Energiewende’s Energy Data and Modelling team, the training focused on enhancing the analytical skills of energy professionals, underscoring the pivotal role of data-driven narratives in shaping the global energy transition. ⚡ Over three days, participants engaged in wide-ranging discussions on how data analytics can be tailored to different regional and policy contexts. The programme covered the full pipeline for building data-evidenced policy recommendations – from data harvesting and structuring to creating compelling visualisations and applying energy system modelling techniques. Practical exercises, for example on the impacts of COVID-19 on the energy sector, highlighted the power of evidence-based storytelling in guiding policy frameworks and engaging stakeholders. 🤝 INETTT’s inaugural Energy System Analytics Training not only equipped participants with advanced analytical skills but also strengthened the global energy community, fostering collaboration and commitment to tackling common challenges across energy sectors around the world.
