You can now register for the Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V. course "Introduction to #GenderEquality in Humanitarian Action and Fragile Contexts" via our website. The impact of #crises on people's lives, experiences and material conditions varies according to gender. #Humanitarian aid activities can reinforce or reduce existing inequalities. In order to ensure needs-based and effective humanitarian #assistance (and development projects in fragile context), consideration of #gender aspects is inevitable. In the recent years, institutional donor agencies have required gender-mainstreaming and gender-markers when developing humanitarian (as well as development/nexus) #projects. It is important to understand how gender aspects play a role in crises or fragile context, and to put this knowledge into practice in design and implementation of a project. The aim of the training is to provide key approaches and practical tools that can lead to meeting the immediate needs of women, men, girls and boys affected by natural disasters and humanitarian #conflict in a way that also addresses the underlying causes of people's #vulnerability, particularly as a result and cause of gender #inequality. Staff of humanitarian (and development) organisations, with or without gender focus, as well as graduates of relevant disciplines are targets for this course. The training is an in-person course at the Akademie der Ruhr-Universität gGmbH on 5 and 6 November, 2024 and includes regular breaks as well as vegetarian catering. Head over to our #website to register for a fee of 400€: https://lnkd.in/derbEgm5

We are thrilled to announce the first completion of the academy for humanitarian action (aha)'s Certificate of Advanced Studies in Anticipatory Action! #Congratulations to Björn Klüver from Plan International Deutschland e.V. for achieving this milestone. The Certificate of Advanced Studies (#CAS) in #AnticipatoryHumanitarianAction is a comprehensive program designed to equip humanitarian professionals with the knowledge and skills to confidently navigate the approach of #AnticipatoryAction. The courses you can choose from to obtain this certificate cover diverse aspects such as basic concepts and mechanisms, the use of geoinformation systems (#GIS) as well as Anticipatory Action in conflict settings. Björn reflects on the profound impact the CAS program has had on his professional development and work at Plan International: “The CAS program has proven to be an invaluable added value for my work at Plan International. By participating in the program, I was able to significantly expand my expertise and put it directly into practice. One example of this is the development of child-friendly, inclusive and gender-responsive Anticipatory Action Frameworks for projects in the Philippines. The program enabled me to develop tailor-made solutions that address both current needs and future challenges. In my work with the Plan International Anticipatory Action Working Group, I was able to set standards and strategic directions. The structured approach of the program helped me to tackle complex problems systematically and develop innovative approaches. The completion of the CAS contributed significantly to sharpening my skills and preparing me for the challenges in my field of work.” Learn more about this program and make sure to take a look at the aha’s other certification programs in “#Foundations of Humanitarian Action” and “Locally-led Humanitarian Action”: https://lnkd.in/eCwBTYUz).

The academy for humanitarian action hosted a two-day training course on “#MEAL in Anticipatory Humanitarian Action” last week. The workshop took place at the facilities of the Akademie der Ruhr-Universität gGmbH and was led by Karen Dall and Anita Auerbach (née Yeomans) from the German Red Cross as well as Clemens Gros from the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre. Through a mixture of expert inputs, group work and scenario exercises, the 16 participants from different humanitarian #NGOs received a comprehensive introduction to the particular aspects related to monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) in anticipatory action projects. The training was part of Institut für Friedenssicherungsrecht und Humanitäres Völkerrecht (IFHV)'s and VENRO's joint capacity sharing project, funded by the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany. The project supports German #humanitarian NGOs and local partner organizations in their efforts to implement future-oriented reforms and approaches like #anticipatory humanitarian action, to drive innovation as well as to enhance #sustainability and efficiency. Beyond many other individual #training courses, the aha also offers a structured #certification program in three focus areas, including anticipatory humanitarian action. You can now register for the Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V. course "Introductory Workshop on Racism and Postcolonial Power Structures" via our website. ❗ Please note that the course will be in #German. Addressing the #power system of racism and its entanglements with other phenomena such as sexism, homophobia and transhostility, ableism, etc. is essential in order to shape #equal coexistence in society and reduce power #inequalities globally and locally. Development cooperation and humanitarian aid in particular are based on colonial power relations. In this workshop unit, #racism will first be defined and its mechanisms of action identified. In which structures does racism operate in the German context and globally? To do this, we will look at historical backgrounds and analyse post-colonial power systems. Where do we find these power inequalities in the working context of international #humanitarian aid and development policy? How and where is colonial continuity evident? Finally, #postcolonial and racist patterns of thought and narratives in our own work will be examined. Racism in images, in one's own language and in communication and #cooperation with partners in the Global South will be analysed in a practical way in order to find strategies for action and approaches for change. The course is targeting staff members of humanitarian organisations who are active in #project work as well as communication and #media work. You will learn reflecting on how postcolonial and #racist thought patterns are structurally anchored in the field of humanitarian #aid and in your own areas of work, questioning and examining how the findings are transferred to your own work context. Further more you will develop initial ideas for action #strategies and approaches to change in your own work context. The course is planned as 2-day training in person in German, taking place on 9 and 10 September 2024 in Bochum at the Akademie der Ruhr-Universität gGmbH and includes regular breaks. There are still places available for the Institut für Friedenssicherungsrecht und Humanitäres Völkerrecht (IFHV) course "#MEAL in Anticipatory Humanitarian Action". ❗️Please only register if you come from Germany or other EU countries, otherwise it will not be possible to get a visa in time. ❗️ With anticipatory action being considered an innovative approach and a relatively recent addition to the #humanitarian sector, this training responds to the urgent need to generate robust evidence on the effectiveness, also compared to conventional humanitarian #response, and to learn what works and how to do better, e.g. with regards to processes and also triggers. The course is targeting staff of humanitarian #NGOs with several years of professional experience, practitioners in the areas of #DRR/anticipatory action, staff in charge of MEAL operations; We kindly ask German NGO colleagues to forward this invitation to their local and national #partners. You will learn why M&E is important for anticipatory action and what particular M&E challenges for slow and fast onset #hazards are in the context of anticipatory action. Furthermore, you will get to know how to #monitor and evaluate anticipatory actions for slow and fast-onset hazards, including the discussion of practical examples of #trigger and impact evaluations as well as what evidence there is for the positive impact of anticipatory action for affected #communities (also in comparison with "conventional" humanitarian measures).
