Before entering a conference room, you must know your audience. You'll need to know your audiences and what can be done with or without them. No action can be an action even; no decision can be a decision, but you must your audiences. You are there to capture their thinking by just observing them. They elevate you wrong if you are a good actor. If you don't know your audience, don't pretend that you know. Don't ever be emotional. Once upon a time. A customer wants to give me a lesson and buys five million dollar products from my colleague, and I tell my boss great. We shouldn't let them know we are one. I look sad but must eat something good to celebrate because I have more money. They could buy more from him, nothing changes.

Before entering the conference room, approach the concept of "know the goals" with the strategic mindset applicable to the role in which you are attending to maximize the benefit of attendance to your company. For example a business development manager would likely want to consider expanding his/her professional network, gaining industry insights and seek potential business opportunities. An engineer would likely consider aligning technical interests, project research objectives, and professional development such as specific training sessions or additional certifications. By clearly defining objectives related to specific roles, the professional can strategically plan their conference experience to drive tangible outcomes for their company.

Define your purpose: Are you there to learn about cultivation techniques, to scout for the latest in cannabis tech, or to understand changes in regulations? Set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. For example, you might aim to leave the conference with contact information for at least five potential clients for your cannabis edibles business, or to attend three workshops specifically on sustainable cultivation practices. Prioritize: Decide what’s most important. If the main goal is to find investors, then tailor your schedule to attend pitches and networking events. Prepare questions: Think about what information you need to meet your goals and prepare to ask these questions during sessions or networking.

In large corporations, the strategy is already built for us by the C-level. This means, when we get to our conference, the strategy development we need to do is more granular and likely departmentally focused. Therefore, it’s imperative that we start with a knowledge of the corporate goals already in place. Until everyone in our team is clear about the goals from the top, there is no reason to discuss our own objectives. We will get there later in the conference, but it’s critical to start with a common understanding of exactly what the top leaders have as their goals.

In my experience attending conferences, making good decisions involves thorough preparation and careful listening. Before the event, I set goals for what my company and I should achieve, study the attendees, and plan my contributions to discussions. At the conference, I connect with key people, actively listen, and critically evaluate how the information aligns with my objectives. I always take notes—remembering a notebook is crucial! Post-conference, I reflect on the insights and discussions, discuss various viewpoints with my team, and draft an action plan. It's crucial to keep in touch with new connections, particularly those who can impact strategic decisions, to foster long-term benefits.

When both parties want something out of the meetings, follow your audience strategy sincerely and be firm on your ground. There is no need to prepare too much when you want to finish something. You fight for his strategy and think you are so intelligent. No, prepare to get things done, and don't even think about his plan may harm you. You are so bright; you know your bottom line and can get things done with him. Ditch your intelligence when the counterparty tries to make things happen; just corporate.

Preparation is absolutely key to putting one's best foot forward when planning to attend a professional meeting or conference. This will benefit the individual by maximizing his/her relevance. This will ensure he/she makes the most of his/her time attending sessions most applicable to his/her areas of work. This will also benefit efforts to network by identifying industrial leaders & peers. Researching topics & speakers can also reveal potential collaborations or other business opportunities. Preparation is key to strategic planning in order to prioritize sessions & get the most out of the time.
-
Look up the backgrounds of key speakers and the companies they represent. Understanding their role in the space can help you connect more meaningfully. Also, familiarize yourself with the schedule. Highlight sessions that align with your goals. Based on your goals, prepare specific questions you want answered. This shows speakers and peers that you're knowledgeable and engaged. You want to get the most out of your exchanges. A little prep work goes a long way.

Active listening is crucial for business development managers for several reasons. 1. Understanding Client Needs. 2. Building Rapport & Trust. 3. Identifying Opportunities (seeking underlying needs). 4. Effective Communication by listening to clients & demonstrating genuine commitment to understanding their client needs, BDMs can stand out from competitors who may focus solely on pushing their agenda. Active listening is key to developing & maintaining long lasting repeat clients that allow businesses access to a well balanced growth.

Languages only carry so much in communication. You need to observe the tone of the person making speeches, the gestures he makes, the facial expressions he makes, and the meeting layout on that day, whether you two are hugging or shaking hands. His actions mean a lot

In my experience, active listening has to be one of the best indicators as to the success of a conference. It’s easy to hear the words, but not understand the meaning or impact. Instead of listening for your chance to counter argue a point, listen for your chance to ask another question and learn more context. It’s easy to quickly jump in and explain my perspective or what I believe is the best path forward, before I give them the opportunity to fully express their perspective. If we can focus on and be more diligent with active listening, we can learn and absorb much more than we anticipated. Those pieces of information are invaluable.

Please be sure to show your respect and know your audience. I have people who tend to ignore me, but they do care to get something out of me. So, back to rule one: know your audience so they don't ditch you when the project is done and that your name needs to be added to the list. I may not survive after planting seeds and pouring my magic blessing water to water the seeds and get pulled out of the scene. It happens a lot when you work with shallow people. A fruitful relationship is when you have more bargaining power on the table and you contribute. You should let your audience know that nothing is free; they get karma when they use you and ditch you later. So engaging? Yeah!

Engaging wisely is about making every conversation count. Tailor Your Interactions. If your goal is to find a distributor, seek out conversations with those in distribution. If it's to learn, engage with experts in panels or workshops. Value Quality, Over Quantity. It’s better to have a few meaningful conversations than many superficial ones. Follow Up. After a good interaction, exchange contact details and follow up with a personalized message referencing your conversation. Respect rveryone's time. Be concise in your questions and pitches. Make sure you’re adding value to the conversation, not just taking information. Be Genuine. Authenticity can forge stronger, longer-lasting relationships than a hard sell ever could.

Humans are very complex living creatures. People acting well often do better than people who are honest and sincere. Reflect on what can be done as a better actress or reflect on what can be done as a sincere teammate. It depends on what circumstances you are in. The environment you are in decides if you need to reflect on your steps and reflect. If you must reflect on how to engage people better, make it worth it. If you need to reflect on things that can be done better, master project management skills.

This is where the rubber meets the road. The goal of these conferences is not to discuss topics for the sake of discussion, but instead to come to an agreement on key business decisions. Make sure to leave a block of time, at the end of the conference, specifically dedicated to making decisions. Then agree on a follow-up cadence wherein agreed action items will be tracked to completion. Employee moral is negativity impacted for many reasons, but lack of decisiveness coming out of a strategic conference should never be one of them. Make decisions, cascade awareness of them quickly, and execute daily actions that align with those decisions.

For more seasoned Conference attendees: Mentorship: Take the opportunity to guide newcomers. It’s a chance to give back and may lead to unexpected collaborations. I appreciate those who extended their hand to me years ago. Evaluate Competitors: Keep an eye on competitors' actions; conventions can be a treasure trove of competitive intelligence. Competitors keep you sharp. Don't get complacent, or you'll lose your edge. For all: Self-Care. Avoid burnout. Conventions can be exhausting, so schedule downtime and don’t try to do everything. When I engage with folks at conferences, I see how they manage themselves, and it tells me a lot about how they will manage their business.
