Only Down
"Only Down", a game made for VimJam4.
Controls are arrow keys space or WASD space, or a gamepad.
NOTE: Sometimes the game loads and the controls do nothing, reloading the page seems to fix it. This seems to be an itch.io caused issue, as local web build never showed this issue.
The game is littered with checkpoints, which was the main focus for the jam. I initially had the concept to put the theme in checkpoints, where you could draw lines between checkpoints and needed to cross those lines for finding secrets. But, after a prototype, I noticed that idea didn't work. So the theme is only confined to the secret ending. Oh, yes, there is a secret ending.
When I started out, the general game concept of going down a mountain instead of climbing up as in most games stuck with me, so that became the game.
I didn't use any of the listed diversifiers of the jam. But I did put in my own limitation. I made all the art myself, in EGA palette (4 colors), in 13x13 pixel tiles. I normally don't do art, so that was fun.

Cool theme usage and atmosphere, but it's too easy to get lost and understand where to go. Fun experience nonetheless
Where did you get lost? It's hard to judge where people can get lost as a creator, as you have expert knowledge. So I'm trying to learn.
I've seen someone get lost on two bits, after getting the wizard hat and at the start of the water area. And I have ideas on how to fix both. But maybe there are more spots to get lost. I did want to have some sense of exploration, but not so much that people would feel completely lost.
I've got lost at the waterfall section, at first I've tried to jump into a waterfall, but kept dying of fall damage after going into tunnel. Then I've jumped into a tube with spikes and got to the scooba device, but I've got there only on like 10 attempts, and felt like it was not the supposed way to go
That is the way to go, to get the diving helm. But I've seen more people get stuck there, so that area isn't well designed :)
