Rufus is Amazon's new generative AI-powered conversational shopping assistant. Announced during Amazon's Q4 earnings call, Rufus is trained on Amazon's product catalogue and information from across the web to answer customer shopping needs. It also makes product comparison recommendations based on context and facilitates product discovery in the same Amazon shopping experience customers use every day. While it is still in beta with a small customer set in Amazon's mobile app, Rufus will likely expand in 2024. My gut reaction: while AI isn't new for Amazon (#unboxed2023 saw the release of AI-generated lifestyle images for sponsored ads a recent example), what makes Rufus interesting is that it comes in the context of an AI search evolution for Google and Microsoft.
