🚢𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲⚓️ Did you know? DHI was founded by solving a challenging harbour development project 60 years ago. Since then, we've empowered more than 600 harbours, ports and terminals in 100 countries to make smarter water-related decisions that are better for the environment. Our experience helps port authorities and operators ensure safety and accommodate increasingly large vessels, and we also work with shipping companies to reduce fuel costs and minimise biofouling. Some of our project highlights include working with APM Terminals’ Pier 400 in Los Angeles to achieve a 90% reduction in container rehandles and helping APM Terminals at MedPort Tangier predict wind gusts and successfully reducing container toppling incidents to zero. Today, we celebrate the incredible contributions of the maritime industry to global trade, the economy and our everyday lives. From the ships that transport goods across oceans to the dedicated professionals who keep our ports running smoothly, the maritime sector is vital to connecting people and communities around the world. 🌊 Let’s honour this day by committing to a sustainable and resilient maritime future. #WorldMaritimeDay #portsafety #maritimeindustry

#60yearsofDHI #WorldRiversDay2024 Join us in celebrating World Rivers Day 2024 this Sunday, 22 September! Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and World Rivers Day are closely linked through their shared goal of promoting sustainable water management and the protection of river ecosystems. Did you know that the IWRM approach to water management started under DHI leadership in the early 1990s? Today, in 2024, it is still a major UNEP DHI Partnership - Centre on Water and Environment flagship initiative. Take a journey through time with us in this article, authored by Professor Torkil Jønch Clausen, Jens Christian Refsgaard, Henrik Larsen, Jørn Rasmussen and Jan Hassing and learn how IWRM evolved from an idea in Copenhagen in 1991 to a global United Nations goal in 2015: 👉🏻 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐖𝐑𝐌 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 https://lnkd.in/g2-3UZY5 #SDG6 #22September #rightsofriver #healthyrivers #habitatrestoration #rivers

🌎 Global Wetland Watch Updates 🛰 Forested wetlands, also known as swamps, are a type of inland palustrine wetland dominated by trees and characterised by the presence of standing water or saturated soil. Forested wetlands are biological hotspots, home to many endemic species, and play a crucial role in supporting surrounding ecosystems. They provide habitats for species such as river dolphins, giant otters, pirarucu, armadillos, anteaters, tapirs and jaguars.🐬 Beyond their rich biodiversity, these wetlands offer flood and erosion control, serve as transportation corridors and produce opportunities for fishing and tourism.🐟  Due to the dense canopy cover, detecting these wetlands and differentiating them from other forests using satellite imagery can be challenging. But in a pilot project from the Amazon Basin in Colombia, Global Wetland Watch has demonstrated that synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors can penetrate through the vegetation canopy and detect the seasonal 'flood pulses' in the swamps. 🛰 👉 You can learn more about the pilot project and the importance of wetlands here: https://lnkd.in/gWmGZ8ba The Global Wetland Watch is an alliance between DHI, UNEP DHI Partnership - Centre on Water and Environment and UN Environment Programme made possible with a grant from Google.org. #ForNature #ClimateAction #GlobalWetlandWatch #EO #Satellites
