MRS . EDMUNDS .

129

LINES WRITTEN ON THE DEATH OF A DEAR FRIEND, MRS.
DAVIES, WHO DIED JAN. 31 , 1834, AGED 69.
Grieve not for her,

Her soul is with the spirits of the blest,

For ever freed from its mortality,
las found the mansion of eternal rest ;

Grieve not for her, before the throne of God

She bows, and thanks him for the afflicting rod .
Grieve not for her,

On earth awhile she was severely tried
By sickness, sin, and pain ;
But now she has safely gained the other side,

Where sin can never reach, and pain no more
Can follow her to that eternal shore.

And shall we grieve for her ?

No, rather let us praise the Heavenly Power,
Who, through this wilderness,

Led her, and gave her strength for every hour ;
That same Almighty hand that led her way,

Can reunite us in the realms of day.

SONNET.

Ah ! who can tell

Beneath a smiling surface, what disease
Lies rankling in the heart, a sacred place,
Too sacred even for a friend to know

Its bitterness ; save that unchanging Friend,
Whose love alone can cure, whose presence heal
The wounds inflicted by an earthly love ;
And that blest book, Oh ! how its leaves unfold
That immortality where souls once more
May reunite without a thought of parting.

Were all our hopes confined to this dark world ,
Where dwells the heart that would not sink with grief ?
But when we realize the Christian's hope,

Itpoints to heaven and bliss beyond the tomb,
Where sorrow never comes—where joys eternal bloom .
