Magwraeth

Ganed Louisine Waldron Elder yn Ninas Efrog Newydd ar Orffennaf 28, 1855, i'r masnachwr George W. Elder (1831-1873) a'i wraig, Matilda Adelaide Waldron (1834–1907). Hi oedd yr ail o bedwar o blant: Anne Eliza Elder, Mrs. Henry Norcross yn ddiweddarach (1853-1917), Adaline Mapings Elder, yn ddiweddarach Mrs Samuel Twyford Peters (1859-1943), a brawd George Waldron Elder (1860-1916 ).

Yn fuan ar ôl marwolaeth ei thad, teithiodd Louisine Elder a'i theulu i Ewrop am gyfnod o dair blynedd. Hwyliod y teulu ar 25 Mai 1873, ar fwrdd yr S.S Calabria, ynghyd â'u teulu estynedig: modryb Amanda McCready a'r teulu, a chefnder Mary Mapes Dodge, golygydd Cylchgrawn St. Nicholas ac awdur Hans Brinker. Yno, bu'r arlunydd Mary Cassatt yn ddylanwad arni, ac awgrymodd ei bod yn buddsoddi mewn gwaith pastel gan Degas.^[3]^[4]
