Landing a Sunderland on the open ocean was fraught with danger, as its thin hull and planing surfaces were never designed to withstand a pounding from large waves and heavy seas. Despite this many crews alighted to pick up the survivors of shot-down aircraft. One such incident occurred in the Bay of Biscay on 13 July 1942, when a No 77 Squadron Whitley crew was picked up by a Sunderland from the newly-formed No 461 Squadron RAAF. This scene was one of a number reconstructed later back at Mount Batten for the benefit of an official photographer.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
