This June 2024, Costa Rica hosted the International Congress of Biological Control #ICBC3, with the goal of providing a platform for knowledge and success sharing multi and inter-disciplinary biological control research and application. Contributing to this goal, our Senior Lead for Biodiversity and Nature-based solutions, Oliver Bach, co-led an interactive panel with Dr. Feng Zhang (CABI), titled “Enhanced biodiversity at landscape level for sustainable management of crop pest”, focusing on provenly successful strategies to scale conservation biological control over complex ecological systems – from community, through ecosystem, towards landscape level approaches. Another foundational concept for the session, introduced to the panelists and published by Dr. Zhang was the “Piecewise structural equation model for the effects of plant species diversity on the trophic interactions of invertebrate herbivores and natural enemies and on crop performance in agroecosystems”. Oliver presented about the practical implementation of habitat islands to promote natural enemies’ populations to control bagworms, slug moths, and other insect pests, which can support a more stable productivity, reduce input costs, and minimize the chemical footprint of the crop for the case of the SAN-Ferrero Nature-Based Solutions Program for Oil Palm in Malaysia and co-led the discussion with the panelists and public. Key takeaways from this session around the vision for promoting conservation biological control practices and enabling their broader uptake based on research findings for broader impacts included: 1. The targeted and effective engagement of other civil society members considering an exhaustive stakeholder mapping. 2. The communication of value propositions and cost-benefit models based on field evidence or scientific data to increase the adoption of nature-based solutions for pest control by agroindustry sectors. 3. Citizen scientists train smallholders and estate representatives, to inform about prejudices of the harm caused by insects and promote the recruitment of community parataxonomists and environmental educators for beneficial insects. The considerations and knowledge shared during the panel are the result of our long-term partnership with Ferrero for developing nature-based solutions, and the amazing work led by the SAN team, with our member organizations CABI and Wild Asia, and research partner Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). It is always an honor to collaborate with our members and corporate partners to deliver transformational results for farmers and nature!
