The Signpost, Tech News, The Bugle, and Centralized discussion are transcluded on this page: en:User:Timeshifter/Newsletters.
My Wikipedia user page is at en:User:Timeshifter.
My first contribution on the Commons was on August 15, 2006. See my earliest user contributions.
Please note: Here follows an introduction similar to the one that I use on my wikipedia user talk page: To keep the discussion in one thread some comments added here are moved to the user talk page of the author. I reply there. I also watchlist that talk page for awhile in order to note when the user there replies. Harassing comments are also sometimes moved off this talk page. As are inappropriately-applied warning templates, etc.. Sometimes the original author is offended by their own harassing comments, and my reply, on their user talk page. They then remove both from their talk page. I guess the light from their own verbal reflection offends them. One can find removed comments by using the history link on a talk page. Users are allowed to remove anything from their talk pages. See en:WP:TALK and other wikipedia and wikimedia guidelines/policies. Sometimes I remove stuff from my talk page for no particular reason, or for many varied reasons. Removal of comments from my talk page implies nothing. Don't take it personally. Unless I have requested otherwise feel free to leave new messages on my talk page. --Timeshifter

Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]
Hi Timeshifter, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Hi Timeshifter, I am sure you will be happy to see this new possibility posting links that allow users to activate gadgets without having to visit our cluttered gadget page. Example:
{{ActivateGadget |name=Geotoolbox }}
Activate the Geotoolbox gadget now!
{{ActivateGadget |name=UserMessages |page=Help:Gadget-UserMessages |message=Note the tiny box in the right, if the gadget is already activated. }}
gives Note the tiny box in the right, if the gadget is already activated.
I know you notified me about category redirects but I better don't touch this because some admins here have very strong opinions regarding them and I don't work a lot with the category-system at all. -- Rillke(q?) 22:42, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. Interesting and useful. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:22, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Small fix
[edit]Hi Timeshifter. I removed this TOC tag you added: here. It was cancelling out the contents display of the whole Commons:Deletion requests/2012/12 page, and bringing those contents down to December 14 @ Template:Dont remove warnings - discussion 2. No biggie, just thought I'd let you know why I removed it. INeverCry 19:11, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
I moved a discussion
[edit]Hi, I moved your discussion to Commons:Village Pump#Anyone else have problem with opening user pages in Firefox? hope that is ok, it gets a better audience there, and it's not really just admins effected. Feel free to reverse it, I was just trying to help.
Hey, that is incredible, the graphic for spending at the top of the page. I don't mind making graphics and if it is a human rights thing I'd love to help. Did you know that more than half of the detainees at gitmo being tortured have already been cleared for release by the whole US gov ? weird, they keep them, torture them, even though they have cleared them for release as people not of interest. Penyulap ☏ 07:38, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Replying here since I can not see your user talk page. Thanks for moving my comment to a better location. I assume you are talking about File:US criminal justice cost timeline.gif. That chart came from the government. Can always use more charts. So thanks for the offer. I haven't been keeping up with Gitmo. Much deeper levels of fascism are occurring in the US. For example; see the charts here:
- Click on the green telephone for my talkpage. I think that the war on drugs is one half just business same as military killing people for money, and half a war between black and white people. That civil war, it kills more people in the US than the whole England Vs Ireland civil war, the Irish republican army and bombings and so on. Penyulap ☏ 09:03, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- I am going to use that line: "and half a war between black and white people. That civil war, it kills more people in the US than the whole England Vs Ireland civil war, the Irish republican army and bombings and so on." The Drug War is an extension of the w:Southern Strategy (based on racism) of the w:U.S. Republican Party that was started by w:Richard Nixon, who also started the w:War on Drugs.
- I see your talk page link. I just can't access the page. I click the link, and nothing shows up. --Timeshifter (talk) 09:34, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- That is strange, I can see it sometimes on my talkpage, that it doesn't want to create the link, but sometimes it does, like on this page, (for me at the moment) that is interesting. User talk:Penyulap is the simple way that should work.
- I've heard it said that the reason that the US 'white' regime doesn't want to call it a civil war is because it would attribute too much intelligence to the black man. If the racist doesn't want the black man in the first place, then why does he kidnap them ? but nothing makes sense there. Do you watch RT news ? Russia today news service ? Penyulap ☏ 10:29, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- The user page problem occurs with all user pages, not just yours. I watch RT news sometimes. The US is in denial about a lot of things, not just racist enforcement of laws, and racist laws, and a racist drug war. --Timeshifter (talk) 12:06, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- I see your talk page link. I just can't access the page. I click the link, and nothing shows up. --Timeshifter (talk) 09:34, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Really like this graph [1]. Is it possible to update? James Heilman, MD (talk) 15:04, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

- I think, this would be a nice image for commons!
- (... and greatest would be if actualized all few months)
- As user of different WPs I've forgotten to ask about how complicated it would be to get such nice statistic-plots for a national WP of own choice?

- I like that graph a lot too. I did not create it though. It was updated July 23, 2013 (see top right of chart). I uploaded a new version today. Thanks for reminding me!

Gallery pages
[edit]I really like your creating Category:Gallery pages. i am frustrated that really nice galleries, like London or New York City are underutilized by being undercategorized. i see 2 ways to solve this: a category tree for galleries, or placing our better galleries in more root categories than we would otherwise place an image, so that London might be in Category:Cities or Category:Europe, so that more people can see these "visual articles".Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:32, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Do you know it it should be "Maps of the Gaza Strip border crossings", or is it fine without a "the"? Orrlingtalk 19:10, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
- It is fine without "the". In fact it sounds wrong to me with "the".
- Another possibility might be to change the word order, and use "Maps of border crossings of the Gaza Strip". Then "the" sounds right.
- It is one of those weird English things. :)
- Category:Gaza Strip border crossings is the parent category. It would sound wrong to me to be titled "The Gaza Strip border crossings", at least as a category name. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:01, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
- There's quite a difference between "Category:The Gaza Strip border crossings" (which is obviously wrong) and "Category:Maps of the Gaza Strip border crossings" (>>> a derivative of Maps of the Gaza Strip, which isn't "Maps of Gaza Strip" as you may note) but I got your point and agree with it. Orrlingtalk 09:58, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
(Unindent). "Border crossings of the Gaza Strip" sounds OK too. So for consistency, and to less confuse the many non-native English speakers using the Commons, we could regularize things by using these category names:
- Category:Maps of the Gaza Strip
- Category:Border crossings of the Gaza Strip
- Category:Maps of border crossings of the Gaza Strip
--Timeshifter (talk) 12:18, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- Category:Border crossings of the Gaza Strip is cool. But I'd like to point out that I feel Category:Maps of Gaza Strip border crossings (under any title) is an unnecessary category. It's not only the absence of any other "Maps of border crossings"-cat on Commons that makes it too odd, but the fact that all the images currently in the category are maps that illustrate the Strip with virually everything about it (roads, populated places, subdivisions...) and are not focusing on examination of (particularly) crossing points. Any such file wouldn't be more "Maps of Gaza Strip border crossings" than "Road maps of the Gaza Strip" or any other mapping feature. So I believe the category is not warranted and is sueprfluous. Orrlingtalk 13:10, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- OK. If there aren't any maps focused on just the border crossings then it is fine by me to delete the category. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:12, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello Timeshifter. I noticed your discussion here. Your discussion probably landed there by error. I suggest that you move your discussion to Template talk:Cat see also and replace it with a redirect to Template talk:Cat see also. Thus, your discussion would have (more) visibility. Usually, we discuss on the template's talk page, and the doc's talk page is just a redirect to the template's talk page. Cheers, --Nnemo (talk) 11:30, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
Cat-a-lot question
[edit]Hi Timeshifter- I saw your name on the Cat-a-lot discussion page and thought you might be able to illuminate me on its use. I could not figure out how to use it to perform what I presumed would be one of its most basic functions, moving the entire content of a renamed category to the new cat page. But either it or I ain't thinkin' right. Here's what I was trying to do. If you think my question should be moved there or elsewhere, please feel free. Thanks in advance for any tips. --Eric my en.wp talk page 14:57, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- I suggest asking at Commons:Help desk. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:01, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks, I'll try there. --Eric my en.wp talk page 22:27, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
Florida prisons
[edit]Did you see the charts for the Florida prison population? File:Children in Florida Adult Prisons.svg shows that most of the children (under 18) in Florida adult prisons are black males, and the average sentences the black males received is almost exactly 50% longer than the white males. The File:Florida Prison Population Disposition.svg shows of the current population how many would still be alive and how many would still be in prison each year. It shows that most of them will be felons who have been released - which makes employment very difficult - the majority have less than 5 years to go before being released. Very few employers are willing to hire felons. There are too many for me to look up the sentence date for each of them, as I did with the children, but I can do a chart showing the number of years before release (it ranges from 0 to over 5,000 years). Delphi234 (talk) 02:42, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- Not quite sure what you are asking me. The 2 charts that are not about children are kind of hard to wrap my mind around. Stuff has to be simple to be truly useful in a big way. In my opinion. I am kind of swamped right now so I am unable to concentrate enough to offer suggestions. It is hard to explain why blacks are disproportionately in prison in 20 words or less. Or in charts. Single parts like number of cannabis arrests in a city such as New York can easily show the injustice since blacks and whites have close to the same rate of cannabis use. But all the other crimes would require many charts and explanations. Poor people get stuck with public defenders. And they are swamped. That is a very big reason why blacks go to prison at a higher rate, and with longer sentences. NPR has done various stories on that. I could go on. Pinging User:Delphi234. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:16, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
OTRS permissions queues
[edit]Hello Timeshifter. You are receiving this message as a license reviewer. As you know, OTRS processes a large amount of tickets relating to image releases (called "permissions"). As a license reviewer, you may have the skills necessary to contribute to this team. If you are interested in learning more about OTRS or to volunteer please visit Meta-Wiki. Tell your friends! Changing a license and editing hidden categories
[edit]Hi Timeshifter- Forgive my laziness, but I don't have time to wade through our help files, and I suspect you'll know the answers to my questions right off the bat. What do you think the appropriate license would be for an image taken from archive.org? And can you tell me how to edit hidden categories? The file I'm trying to troubleshoot is File:Della_historia_di_bologna_Ghirardacci.jpg, which a problem user uploaded as his own work. Thanks in advance for any help. --Eric my en.wp talk page 14:56, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Middle Eastern clothing has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
[edit]Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to [email protected], so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at [email protected].
Thank you!

Hi Timeshifter, what was your rationale to create this cat, when we had Category:Deaths from COVID-19 already since 4 months? --Túrelio (talk) 12:21, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Túrelio. I was getting confused by the names in different places:
- Category:People of the COVID-19 pandemic
- Category:Deaths from COVID-19
- I think others may have been putting people who died in either category. So in the people category I couldn't tell if the person was dead from COVID-19, or a notable healthcare expert, or somebody else.
- Plus I wanted to pull out all the deaths, so that they wouldn't overwhelm the other important death-related subcategories of the death category. Such as infographics, mobile morgues, temporary graves, etc..
- Wikipedia has List of deaths due to COVID-19. I added that link to the specific people category. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:25, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm,
- to be honest, I am not really convinced, though I won't fight about categories. Main problem is, now we have "your" cat and - as a parallel structure - scores of cats in Category:Deaths from COVID-19 by country. In addition, cats like "People of the .." aren't relevant for that, as they don't contain COVID victims. Putting victims into that cat, would clearly have been a miscategorisation. --Túrelio (talk) 19:34, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
