Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

In answer to your question on my talkpage: Yes, it is ok to make mistakes and to have them corrected. But it is not ok to upload a photograh someone else made and later change the authorship to yourself (own work). Are you the photographer? I dont think so. The photo was taken from another website and it is not free as required on Commons. Everything on Commons must be free for every purpose including commercial use by the copyright holders explicite written permission. --Martin H. (talk) 20:48, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for having this clearified. Thanks for fixing the image descriptions now.

I saw http://www.bih-x.com/vijesti/grafika/neretva.jpg which you uploaded to File:Neretva 4.jpg - first in a very small thumbnail size. Also the image on the website have more EXIF data than your upload. How comes? P.s.: the image was first on that website http://www.bih-x.com/vijesti/arhiva/06-11-01-01.htm, not first on Commons. --Martin H. (talk) 21:27, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your absolutely right, they also took the image from somewhere else. I found the original source:

Photo by Sulejman Badzak, UCODEP, all with camera EXIF. This answers the question "Various NGO sites" - as UCODEP is a NGO. Our policy requires that you provide a permission from the copyright holder and forward it to OTRS. My personal opinon is, that you are not the copyright holder as you maintain your own panoramio account without mentioning the source and without any EXIF/camera data. --Martin H. Furthermore i should have checked w:en:User talk:Santasa99 first. Also the history of the Neretva article gives strong evidence that you simply continiue your behaviour on Wikipedia here on Commons. This was NOT your first upload as en.wikipedia clearly shows, so you know how to provide source and author. Page blanking is not the sollution. I want to separate the correct images from the wrong images - here and on Wikipedia. So please help with correcting the information. Images can and will be deleted, however I still appreciate a clear statement what is from you and what not. Here (gallery) and on Wikipedia (gallery). Accounts cant get deleted. You can blank your talkpage after the situation is clearified. --Martin H. (talk) 23:30, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A free license once given is irrevocable, so a call for take down would be invalid if you are the copyright holder. However, I gave some evidence that you might be not the copyright holder, therefore deleted acting precautionary. Please confirm your information (Sulejman Badzak/UCODEP) with OTRS, images will be restored. I only acted inside our policy and deleted images with different copyright claims on other sources. Given your deleted images on en.wp your claim looks untrustworthy, sorry. --Martin H. (talk)

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

"Sidebar" is the key word here - I was completely lost when i tried to delete that cat. It would not occur to me in a million years to look for tools on the sidebar.
