Image Tagging Image:Logan_Martin_Coosa_River.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Logan_Martin_Coosa_River.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Image:Union Pacific Yellowstone National Park Brochure (1921).JPG
[edit]Hi. Could you please clarify the description of Image:Union Pacific Yellowstone National Park Brochure (1921).JPG -- is it from 1921, or something you created this year to look old? Thanks. Nice image, either way. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 02:28, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- This image was extracted from a PDF version of a 1921 documents downloaded from the Internet archive [1]. I have added the URL to the image description. I doubt seriously that I would have the ability to create such a nice image. --Mike Cline 12:57, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. I thought that more likely, but as it wasn't quite clear from the description I wanted to make sure before adding the chronological category. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 16:29, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Copyright on Danish stamps
[edit]It seems unlikely that you are the copyright holder on Danish stamps such as Image:15ore1925.jpg, unless you're much older than average and used to work as an engraver in Denmark :-) . The copyright holder is going to be either the Danish government or the stamp designer, and a 1925 stamp may or may not be old enough to be PD; I don't think anybody has carefully researched this yet. Stan Shebs 20:37, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- Stan you may be right. How do you suggest I permission these at this time until it gets researched?--Mike Cline 21:20, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- Next to all of the Stamps of Denmark category will have to be deleted (although images predating 1923 may be used on the English Wikipedia under US law. In that case, the relevant tag for such uploads would be "PD-US" and "Do not move to Commons"). The problem is that Danish law lacks the nice loopholes in American law. 1) No "work for hire" clause exists, so the copyright belongs to the original artist(s), i.e. the artist and the engraver, and they and their heirs hold copyright until 70 years p.m.a. This excludes roughly all stamps from at least 1933 [introduction of a steel press] and till the early 1950s since the engraver (Friedrich Britze) died in that decade. Taking into account that the relevant designers/artists must also have been dead for at least 70 years, that will leave out most of the older material as well. 2) US law operates with a 1923 cutoff date before which works are copyright exempt. No similar clause exists in Danish law. The law's § 9 speaks of government works but in a very narrow definition, so very likely no luck there either.
- http://www.infokiosk.dk/ is an official copyright website operated by the Danish Ministry of Culture but they don't mention stamps at all. You might take a shot contacting them at [email protected] but expect a negative reply. Expect the same from PostDanmark (mail: [email protected] ) and bear in mind that it is very unlikely that PostDanmark would have the authority to release such works from copyright anyway. You can find the full text of the Danish law at http://www.kum.dk/sw4550.asp If you have the artists' names on hand, some of them will probably be listed on http://www.kulturarv.dk/kid/Forside.do ("søg kunstner" is the search function you'll need). 83.89.43.14 10:26, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- Clearly based on the above, the images of the 1925 and 1934 series airmail stamps cannot remain in the Commons and I will mark them for deletion today. I am not sure that it applies to the proofs and essays images, since these represent original artwork which I own. When an artist sells the original of a work, does not the right to use of that work pass to the new owner?--Mike Cline (talk) 11:40, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- Transfer of physical objects doesn't usually change anything about copyright; you would have had to have gotten a license from the artist, just as for the original works uploaded to commons. We should add the info about Danish stamps to Commons:Stamps/Public domain for future reference; the France section is a good example, listing the various artists. Stan Shebs (talk) 13:55, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure about the laws in your country, but not under Danish jurisdiction. However, special rules apply for museums. To top things off, Danish copyright is granted automatically, no formal registration takes place. Of course, if PostDanmark can dig up a contract stating that X for all time transfers his rights to a work to his employer, I guess that a judge may be influenced by it, but that's just my guess. Trouble is that it is very unlikely that anybody cared about such formalities back then, not to mention that few companies would preserve employment records that old, and Post & Telegrafvæsenet was a very large employer. In fact, the artist behind the 1925 issue died in 1972.[2][3] Regarding the 1930s issue, Johannes Britze [4] ("Johs" is short for "Johannes") died in 1960.[5] I've been unable to dig up a record for Poul E. Johansen but an (apparently minor) artist by that name is buried in Hillerød. Can't find a date of death though. It is a very nice article, the quality of the images is fine, and it is always a pleasure to see foreigners writing about one's own country. Unfortunately, the copyright status doesn't look very positive (unless the Ministry of Culture puts any weight to the fact that the works were published without an accompanying signature, but I very strongly doubt that a work may qualify as "anonymous" if the artist behind it was identified before his own death). § 63 art. 2 defines anonymous works but cases like this seem to be expressly excluded by § 63, art. 3; in other words: standard rules apply. 83.89.43.14 10:18, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:56, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Authorship
[edit]Hi Mike, thank you for your contributions and your work on Commons. Im not happy with the authorship claims on many images, the author is the person who originaly created the content, not someone who transfered the image to Commons. Of course the images are public domain, nevertheless a correct sourcing would be good. Im starting to fix this for you National Park Service images, feel free to help. --Martin H. (talk) 18:51, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- I noticed, that this were only your oldest uploads, so keep on with your good contributions. I also noticed the Category:William Henry Jackson-Hayden Surveys, there are a lot more maybe usefull images on http://www.nps.gov/archive/yell/slidefile/history/jacksonphotos/Page.htm, all images are (probably) PD-USGov-USGS. --Martin H. (talk) 19:41, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Re:Advice on getting license correct
[edit]It looks already fine to me, you should use the license templates
- Merton J. Parks or
- PD-heirs
to remove the "I, the copyright holder...". At best you have the permisssion in written form, Email or Scan, and can forward it to COM:OTRS. --Martin H. (talk) 15:38, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Better source request for Image:SepulcherMountainYNP1977.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:SepulcherMountainYNP1977.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you. High Contrast (talk) 15:45, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

HABS categories
[edit]Hi, in making changes like this, you are removing location specific categories to a more generic one for the archive. Considering there are nearly 300,000 HABS "documents" the category you are moving to seems to be a duplicate of the hidden bucket category. Do you have a plan for moving these a second time? --Fæ (talk) 09:42, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Actually yes. I plan on moving individual photos, documents into the more discrete categories related to the subject of the photo/document. I just needed to get them off the main category page first for ease of access. The Yellowstone category tends to get tons of stuff dumped into it without regard to all the available sub-categories, so I try and keep it cleaned up. --Mike Cline (talk) 14:51, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Okay. It is a shame that cat-a-lot no longer works from searches, it used be to great for this sort of thing. If you don't use VisualFileChange, this may be worth investigating, I have used it for complex sub-category sorting in the past. --Fæ (talk) 16:28, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Yellowstone NP Categories
[edit]Hi there,
I was going to move the below Yellowstone categories to clarify their name (mostly by adding "National Park"). Seeing that you created some of these and know the category well, I'd like to see if you have any comments or objections.
- Category:Aerial views of Yellowstone to Category:Aerial views of Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Angling in Yellowstone to Category:Angling in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Yellowstone bridges to Category:Bridges in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Yellowstone buildings and structures to Category:Buildings and structures in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Hotels in Yellowstone to Category:Hotels in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Yellowstone ranger and entrance stations to Category:Ranger and entrance stations in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Lakes of Yellowstone to Category:Lakes in Yellowstone National Park ("of"? or "in"?)
- Category:Campgrounds of Yellowstone to Category:Campgrounds in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Yellowstone geothermal features to Category:Geothermal features in Yellowstone National Park ("of"? or "in"?)
- Category:Historic drawings of Yellowstone to Category:Drawings of Yellowstone National Park (to go into the "in art" category)
- Category:Art of Yellowstone to Category:Yellowstone National Park in art
- Category:Hot springs of Yellowstone to Category:Hot springs of Yellowstone National Park ("of"? or "in"?)
- Category:Postcards of Yellowstone to Category:Postcards of Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Vehicles and roads in Yellowstone to Category:Transport in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Yellowstone wildfires to Category:Wildfires in Yellowstone National Park
- Category:Landscapes of Yellowstone to Category:Landscapes of Yellowstone National Park
If you agree, I'll go ahead and move the cats (I don't think this is a controversial change in need of a cat-move discussion, but can open one if you (or anyone else reading this) feel it needs it). Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
Thanks and kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 14:26, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Yellowstone geothermal features maps
[edit]Hello,
Recently I created an article called 'Sapphire Pool' on the Dutch Wikipedia. I wanted to add a map of the location of it and looked for it in Commons, but couldn't find one. I did saw some maps with the locations of other features, like Grotto and Old Faithful, uploaded by you. Here's the question: If I want to upload a map with a location in Yellowstone using, for example, the image File:NorthernSectionUpperGeyserBasin.JPG and a red dot to highlight the feature, which license should I be using, or should I not upload it at all because of copyright infringement of the US Government? --DarkShadowTNT (talk) 14:16, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- The original image is in the public domain, so you can modify it for your purposes and load a new version with the PD License. --Mike Cline (talk) 17:01, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, but which one of the numerous licenses? PD-self, PD-USGov, PD-user, PD-ineligible or another one? I like to give the maximum amount of credit to someone, to be safe. --DarkShadowTNT (talk) 17:35, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- I would use PD-USGov --Mike Cline (talk) 14:44, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
