Changing categories

[edit]

I've moved some images from categories, such as Tallinn to Tallinn old town, as the Tallinn category has become very large and it has an insubordinate amounts of pictures of the Tallinn Old Town — not that I mind those images, but I am more for organising them better, whilst the best option is to view the Tallinn gallery or any of the potential sub-galleries. Therefore, if anyone has anything to add about it, then you are very welcome to do so. -Mardus 16:17, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Radisson_SAS_Tallinn_2006-08-14.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Slightly wrong edit descriptions

[edit]
Where the following applies:

I believe I did make the right edits in categorization, but I learned that many of my edit descriptions were wrong by one level:

  • cat change: specificity: Skyscrapers > Skyscrapers in the United Kingdom (child of Skyscrapers):
In parentheses should be: child of Skyscrapers by country, grandchild of Skyscrapers
Subsequently, I moved images from Category:Skyscrapers in the United Kingdom to Tall buildings in London and remembered to add correct edit descriptions, so this point is somewhat moot and therefore I didn't refer to here in respective images' Talk pages.
  • cat change: specificity: Skyscrapers > Skyscrapers in Singapore (child of Skyscrapers)
In parentheses should be: child of Skyscrapers by country, grandchild of Skyscrapers

You said: "Hello. The image more appears to depict a typical table set up with technology, rather than your "three gigahertz personal computer", most of which is out of the picture at the bottom right of the image"

Depends on whether the reader regards "computer" as the entire set up or just the tower, and it depends on the subject of the article the pic is in (none, in this case). So I'm not clear what point you're making. Best Wishes, - Arpingstone 09:39, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Turns out that this image was a duplicate of Image:Pc.computer.bristol.750pix.jpg. -Mardus (talk) 13:57, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mardus! I'm reacting to your message on behalf of the uploader because he doesn't speak English. It is a known fact in the community of huwiki that the uploader is actually the designer of the said device (Ganz factory) and the pictures you found are on websites of resellers. Uploader has sent me the original picture which is way bigger in size than any of those you can possibly find online. I will reupload with original size. Hope this clarifies the situation. 194.151.37.123 16:49, 29 November 2011 (UTC) (Sorry, forgot to login Teemeah (talk) 16:50, 29 November 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Jordan FOP

[edit]

Hi Mardus, You posted a NO Jordan FOP last year. You missed the fact that articles 17 and 20 target Books, booklets and other written material. Please check to the original new 2014 Arabic Text, not the old translated one. --Tarawneh (talk) 14:39, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, User:Tarawneh. I can't read Arabic, so I don't know the current nature of Jordanian copyright law. The main idea is, that just as "books, booklets and other written materal", works of architecture also fall under 'published works', and for FOP to apply (to be 'OK'), there should not be any requirement to ask permission from the author (one or more architects) or the owner of the building, and/or requirements of payments to the author or any collection agency for publishing a photo or other audiovisual media made of a work of architecture. -Mardus (talk) 15:39, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mardus, you are just extrapolating other laws into the Jordanian law based on the meaning of English words used by some translator. The only acceptable laws texts in Jordanian courts are Arabic text, cause the parliament produces the laws in Arabic. The concept of asking for permission to get a photo of an intentionally-publicly available structure ( not persons ) has no meaning in Jordan or in the Jordanian law. This concept does not exist in Jordan. I my self when I joined commons 10 years ago had some rough time to get the idea of forbidding a user of using images he shot him self. I even dare anyone to get me a single case outside of our commons servers that talks about the existence of the concept in general in Jordanian laws :P . --Tarawneh (talk) 16:02, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Tarawneh: Because the main FOP page on Commons relies on the English language, then other users also rely on English-langauge translations of the law.
Unless Jordanian copyright law explicitly says that it's permissible to make and freely publish visual media that depicts works of art situated in public spaces (including photos of works of architecture), then it is really not permissible.
Assuming that maybe it's permissible only because it doesn't say that it's prohibited, inevitably opens a huge can of worms, because then other users might begin assuming this about other countries' copyright laws that are at best ambiguous and at worst confusing. Therefore it's better to err on the safe side. -Mardus (talk) 16:27, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mardus and Tarawneh, I would suggest to discuss this at CT:FOP. Thanks for the important point that the copyright law was amended in 2014. This amendment is already recorded at WIPO but has unfortunately not yet been translated to English. It would be helpful to provide a translation of the relevant passages of the amendment from Arabic to English at CT:FOP. When this discussion has been opened, I will post a notice to the three deletion requests that they should be suspended until we have resolved this. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 16:54, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Mardus: @Tarawneh: I'd like to jump in and add that after reading the supplied link of the amended law that the law explicitly exempts Architectural Structures from copyright (public domain. owned by the state) if they can be considered "folklore" or connected to the Jordanian heritage or tradition. --Hexafluoride (talk) 00:42, 17 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

USGS Postscript

[edit]

Hi. Where can i find that USGS Postscript-shakemaps ? -- ...

OK, found it in the drop-down below ... but e.g. looking at recent Ecuador-quake: pdfinfo intensity.ps says only 612x792 and it looks much low-res even compared to the previous versions of File:Shakemap_Ecuador_April_2016.jpg. --Itu (talk) 05:44, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Itu, it seems, that the USGS website went through a redesign. Anyways, I went to a recent shakemap of Equador from the USGS website, and the page has a Downloads section. The file you might be looking for, is the intensity map and a ZIP version of it, which is actually ps.zip; it's size is approximately over 800 Kb. I looked through my recent Commons maps files, and I have intensity.ps.zip for the Nepal earthquake map. I used The GIMP to open that file, and Ghostscript. Before the file is opened in GIMP, I can set height and width parameters as in the JPEG original, such as 2125 × 2480 pixels, and specify graphic and text antialiasing. Antialiasing must be be set to strong to avoid hairy text and lines in the map. -Mardus /talk 11:57, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Itu: GPL GhostScript binaries can be downloaded from SourceForge here. -Mardus /talk 12:02, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's not easy to follow your procedure and its pretty manual. Generally there should be some automatic processing with the basic tools given by a commandline. --Itu (talk) 13:18, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Installing The GIMP is easy; intalling Ghostscript is easy, too. All I need to do after that, is download that intensity.ps.zip file and set the dimensions to 2125 × 2480, and crop after that. It does take several steps, of course. Most Linux setups already have The Gimp and Ghostscript installed out of the box. -Mardus /talk 13:53, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This file was deleted mostly because of bad quality, as it was taken with an iPhone 6 at such a distance, that the device was really small relative to its surroundings, so the crop was quite grainy. The filename was also wrong, and so was the original description, as I didn't notice that the device in the photo turned out to be a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and not a Note 7 (the latter was not on display, but shown in a large promo display image). -Mardus /talk 20:38, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your behaviour

[edit]

What you do here clearly amounts to harassing. You've came up with bunch of baseless accusations. I don't think I've ever given you reason to suspect me of something sinister. If I use an IP address then sure, this address may change occasionally, but this in itself can't be a problem. I recall you that sockpuppetry is special kind of use of IP addresses and/or usernames in order to deceive or mislead other users. Using IP addresses is allowed, and not every use of IP address should be suspected of sockpuppetry. Otherwise the working environment here'd be ill-natured for everyone. Neither is there a rule or convention that you can do only non-prolific editing without logging in or without having an account. So, if you come across sockpuppetry in future and what to make accusations, then also please make sure that there actually is deceiving (e.g. someone uses muliple accounts/addresses to gather support, doing controversial edits in particular area using multiple accounts). Also, multiple accounts that you suspect of being the same person need to be named, and most importantly, behavioural evidence to tie these accounts need to be provided. Making accusations without considering these basic aspects can only be rude.

You accuse me of "trying to get an upper hand in a conversation". My intention never is to get merely an upper hand in discussions. I always try to argument in discussions and I try to be clear. This may put me somewhat "upper" position, but only if opposite user doesn't follow standards of sensible discussion. I assume you refer to earlier dispute on categorization. I'm sorry but to me it seemed and still seems that in this dispute you made claims that you refused to explain and prove. You pretty much demanded your counerpart to take your actions as they are because you say so. Specifically, you are probably aware that as per COM:CAT users are expected to determine main subject and/or noteworthy features. If you look around in categories you see that other users generally follow this. You however often choose to ignore this practise and instead you look for tiny details that are as little noteworthy as possible and categorize by that. Your purpose seems to be to play hide and seek, as "Look what I found on this image, see if you can find it too." To me this looks like straightforward misuse of categories as you make categories less useful, if not useless, for people use categories to find reasonably good illustrations on particular subject. Keeping all that in mind you really shouln't accuse me of daring to question your actions.

Now, I didn't reply in order to pick up a fight or in order to continue it. I only ask you to assume good faith in interactions with other users, both with users that are logged in and those that are not, or those that are prolific and experienced and those who are not. If other user starts a discussion then one probably has a point and a reason to do so. In this case good manners is to at least try to understand what the concern is instead of running down your opponent at any cost. 90.191.81.65 18:19, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Steindy nimetas selle faili kustutamiseks põhjusel "bad crop, too small, we have a crop in file:Alexander Kačaniklić at qualifications for the 2014 FIFA World Cup - Austria vs Sweden 2013-06-07 (003).jpg. I don't want that my photos are cropped in stamp format with bad quality."

Kuna mind ei teavitatud, pidasin vajalikuks asja suure kella külge panna küll, kuigi selleks sai mitte just täpselt õige foorum. Teinekord teen sissekande hoopis siia: Commons:Undeletion requests. -Mardus /talk 18:15, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The higher-resoution image that you uploaded, was very much upscaled by software at the source server, hence the very visible artifacts of upscaling, which defeats the point of having a higher-resolution image in the first place. The presence of artifacts in the lower-resolution (1200×856-pixel) image is negligible. If I recall correctly, then this was the maximum resolution offered by the website. As ar as I could tell, the scan of this image was downscaled during editing by the article author, or the relevant multimedia staff. -Mardus /talk 10:18, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
