Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:29, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Shoreditch railway station
[edit]Just FYI, I've undone this edit; this is the former British Rail Shoreditch railway station, and has nothing to do with Shoreditch tube station (or any other). — iridescent 20:32, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
I've readded Category:Rail transport in North Yorkshire to Category:Airedale Line which you removed in this edit. After the Kildwick level crossing the line moves out of West Yorkshire in to North Yorkshire, so it is a relevant category. --JD554 (talk) 11:17, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
British trains
[edit]Hi, thanks for categorising some train photos. To make things easier, I created a template Ukt to automatically add the relevant categories. You can use it via . Please see the template page for more info.
Thanks! -mattbuck (Talk) 17:26, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
- See above. This template adds the image to the 4 train category systems in one go. -mattbuck (Talk) 20:54, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Roundhouse
[edit]Re: Your edit to Category:The_Roundhouse. Huh? How can it not be a former roundhouse? It's been a music venue at least since the 1960s. - Jmabel ! talk 15:01, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- The difficulty here is that 99.9% of all roundhouses are, by definition, "former" in the sense that they are not used for the purpose they were intended. In fact, there is only one operational roundhouse, en:Barrow Hill Engine Shed, and it doesn't seem to make much sense to me to have this one in the "roundhouses" proper category and everything else in the "former" category. Hope this makes sense...? Ravenseft (talk) 15:15, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:Cannon Street Station 3.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Cannon Street Station 3.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Hull to York Line
[edit]Hi, a couple of years ago you re-merged 2 sub categories into Category:Hull to York Line. Over the last week this has been split out again to Category:Market Weighton to Beverley line and Category:York and North Midland Railway (York to Market Weigton branch). Can you take a look to see if this split is really needed, it is certainly confusing for the non-railway enthusiast. Thanks. Keith D (talk) 13:12, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
- This is rather complicated as I have since learnt that there is no such thing as a "Hull to York Line", only different lines over which a train service operates. It's best explained on its own wiki page. The categories here concern the now-closed route between Hull and York. There's a good argument for renaming and merging Category:York and North Midland Railway (York to Market Weigton branch) and Category:Market Weighton to Beverley line to "York to Beverley Line" as per its article. It would be useful if User:Prof.Haddock could comment. Lamberhurst (talk) 21:07, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- I think the split is helpful - the two sections are separated by about 2 decades, and have difference styles of buildings etc, also the modern day "Hudson's Way" is exclusively on one part.
- How about I rename the two sections to:
- I can see the current category descriptions is/are confusing.
- I'll do the renamed now, and see if the category can be made non-confusing. If there is still a problem please let me know.
- I'll also tidy up Category:Hull to York Line, removing some pages that are in sub-categories, and see if there are any other confusing category names. Hopefully the names above should be useful to everyone as they match the obvious geographical description.Prof.Haddock (talk) 22:17, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
Unnecessary to WHOM?
[edit]re: this Try reading before reverting... A practice I thoroughly loath and despise. Suggesting better meta-categories in an upper category like that can only help people Unfamiliar with a topic smarter and select better. Where's the harm in my three lines of advice????? // FrankB 00:04, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- I removed it because it doesn't make sense. The English explanation doesn't correspond with the other language versions and the references to "important subcategories" refers to a selection of subcategories without it being clear why those are the important ones. Rolling stock is not an "industry term" and the term "train consists" is an American term unknown to other countries. The final line about "for media by country...." is so obvious as to make it redundant. You may loath changes to redundant text but I loath even more editors who presume that what is being changed hasn't been read beforehand by the person changing it. I see little valid reason for keeping the text. Lamberhurst (talk) 07:53, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

No idea why you've done this. Surely they are coterminous? Rodhullandemu (talk) 09:40, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- Where a disused line has been converted into a footpath and given an official name, I've always thought it best to create a separate category for path-related images, leaving the line category to concentrate on images from the period when it was in operation and to gather together the line's former stations. I find it also helps categorising images without having to check the OS map as contributors (particularly in this case) are more likely to be aware of the path under its given name rather than its previous railway incarnation and so will use this name in their image descriptions. Lamberhurst (talk) 07:40, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- I understand that, but (for example) one of the most notable features on the pathway is West Derby railway station and if I were looking for that in this category, I'd be surprised not to find it. It's also difficult to find criteria to reasonably make a case for separate categories, e.g. NLER Knotty Ash Feb 10 2010 (2).jpg depicts an overline bridge and Structure by the North Liverpool Extension Line.jpg depicts a trackside milk churn stand. I think this needs more thought but it's late here and I will look at what I did with similar cases in Scotland. Rodhullandemu (talk) 22:00, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- There's no objection to having a station under both categories if you feel there is a strong association between the station and the path. Problem is that I find it difficult to think of very many other paths in the country where the original rail line is better known than the named footpath. In most cases, the footpath was created long after the line's closure and path users appear in general to have very limited knowledge of what came before. I would like to think that the history of the route as a functioning rail line ended on the date of complete closure, after which point its rebirth as a footpath merits a new category. A good example would be Cranleigh Line / Downs Link, or Formartine and Buchan Railway / Formartine and Buchan Way. Lamberhurst (talk) 09:17, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

File:D2203 at Upwell station (1952) 01.jpg
[edit]Hi. Thanks for uploading this photograph. However, it seems to be mis-named and mis-labelled. The picture shows class 04 locomotive 11102, which was later renumbered D2202, and not D2203 as in your file name and file description. The four original locos of this class were 11100, 11101, 11102, 11103, and were renumbered as D2200, D2201, D2202, D2203, respectively. Timothy Titus (talk) 23:45, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Scotrail class 158s
[edit]Re [2] - I took the photo in 2006, whicg according to w:Scotrail was First Scotrail at the time, not National Express. Could you confirm please? Also, do you know if the livery its carrying is First Scotrail or was it still left in its old livery?
Finally, I think Category:British Rail Class 158s of ScotRail should be a disambiguation page, rather than redirecting to one specific era. What do you think? O Still Small Voice of Clam 06:59, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, that image should be in the First ScotRail category and I see that you've now done it. I have attempted a clean-up of the ScotRail category and the numerous mis-categorised images. ScotRail is now a disambiguation page. This will hopefully limit the lazy categorisation of images under the ScotRail heading. I see that there is now the category Trains in ScotRail InterCity livery for Abellio trains but I'm inclined to leave it for the time being. Lamberhurst (talk) 12:04, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Rash categorization
[edit]Why this? Coordinates and category of the Polish city, the description in Polish - why "in the Czech Republic"? --ŠJů (talk) 16:09, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
And this one – how did you find out that the photo was taken in the Czech Republic? Are you just guessing, because the author has a Czech name? How do you know that this author is not traveling and has taken a photograph in any other country? Don't guess, find out! --ŠJů (talk) 16:17, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- OK, the first one was wrong but the second I did check back through the person's other photos, including from the same time period, and they were all in the Czech Republic. It's not guesswork, but when sorting 100s of images, it's not surprising that one may be incorrect. Lamberhurst (talk) 19:33, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Also, if you zoom in the picture, you will see "Серпухов" on the train. It means that the train goes to Category:Serpukhov Station which is not on the Kiyevsky direction but on the Kursky direction. So, if the logic for all photos is the same, they all probably must belong to Category:Trains at Kursky Rail Terminal. Michgrig (talk) 15:22, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Michgrig: - Hello, I relied on the description given in Flickr by the photographer. For this photo, he has indicated "Kievski Vokzal". Lamberhurst (talk) 15:26, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I haven't noticed the description. Thanks. Michgrig (talk) 15:37, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Category:Trains of ScotRail
[edit]Hello, I saw you created Category:Trains of ScotRail so thought I would ask, what do you think we should call the new category for ScotRail trains under nationalisation? NemesisAT (talk) 22:24, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
- @NemesisAT: - this is a really difficult one. The Category:ScotRail disambiguation was done to avoid having to regularly recategorise ScotRail images into their correct categories. If this category is moved to a disambig page (as was done on Wikipedia), that problem comes back. What about Category:ScotRail Trains which will be the name of the company which operates the services? Then you would have Category:Trains of ScotRail Trains (as with Category:Trains of South West Trains)? Lamberhurst (talk) 11:10, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Former Engineers' Office, Chesterfield (2).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. I just wanted to say thanks so much for all the images you've uploaded! It's really appreciated. Blythwood (talk) 23:10, 27 December 2023 (UTC) |
Is there any central discussion of this recent change and reversion? Otherwise if this turns into an edit war, it's going to be a lot of legwork. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:17, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
- Not to my knowledge. I reverted because it was an undiscussed change to a category name which has existed for years and one which doesn't make sense for railway companies manufacturing and working their own locomotives. Lamberhurst (talk) 16:07, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
