Comments Good. For documentation it would be interesting to have a separate closeup image of the "coats of arms area" since the golden inscription in this image is hardly readable. --Iotatau 22:13, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comments could be a bit crisper in full solution but still QI because of composition and colours imo --Mbdortmund 12:26, 31 October 2009 (UTC)  Info I think that the main subjects, the tower and the houses in the town as well as the castle are quite sharp. On the other hand I agree that the trees and the rocks on the mountain could really be 'crisper' at full resolution. I found out that the crispiness is lost here in the noise reduction component of Canon's RAW file converter. It treats the fine structures of distant plants like noise. Therefore buildings and cars appear 'crispier' than vegetation. Unfortunatly the software does not alow me to control the noise reduction algorithm. So I can only ask you, if this is really an issue for you or not. --Johannes Robalotoff 18:59, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think this photo meets QI requirements. P.S. You can try and another RAW converter such as Adobe's RAW. - Darius Baužys 13:10, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

perspective correction

Many thanks for your perspective correction of my CoA of Paris, now promoted as QI ! Ok, I have to download the tool, but I'm not sure that I could understand how using it...I'll try ! Friendly from Paris,---Jebulon (talk) 19:50, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You' re welcome! It was somewhat pedantic by me anyway to ask for a correction of this picture, because the original geometry was already almost OK :-) So I felt obliged to show what I meant... Many people won't see the difference. It is only obvious on the monitor at full resolution. --JRff (talk) 21:12, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Same subject, a month later...
first, many thanks for your kind reviews, it's very interesting to me
Perspective distortion is (was ?) a great problem to me, because I work on Mac, and there are not many freewares except Hugin. I've downloaded it, but I'm absolutely unable to use it, I don't understand anything. Today, I've downloaded the Gimp, and it seems to be good now.

My next problem is the noise in difficult light (obelisk...), but the solution is in to buy another camera, i'm afraid.
OK, I've uploaded a corrected version of the street sign, and a new version of another close-up of the streetlamp. Thoughts about ?
Thank you very much for your help.
Have a nice sunday (...bad weather over Paris :( ...) --Jebulon (talk) 10:51, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jebulon, for simple perspective corrections on two-dimensional objects, Gimp is sufficient, so there is no need to use something as complicated as hugin. But if you once know how to use hugin, using Gimp might be even more cumbersome. This is because you have to tell Gimp how it should correct the image, while hugin wants to know from you only what it should optimize, not how it should do it. Also hugin can work with 16 bits per channel, and it gives better results because its methods are specially designed for photography. Did you look at this turorial and also this one? --JRff (talk) 12:47, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comments  Question The central tower, leaning slightly, I think it's natural. Can you confirm? --Archaeodontosaurus 15:32, 15 August 2010 (UTC) The tower is deformed in reality. (The medieval walls have weakened.) The left wall leans inside at the top, so that the tower is no longer cylindrical there. The right wall is completely upright on the image as is the house on the right. So there is no tilt or deformation in the image itself. --Johannes Robalotoff 16:47, 15 August 2010 (UTC)*  Support QI for me --Archaeodontosaurus 06:01, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

True or not true? --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 13:17, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the tower is actually a bit leaning, but not as much as it appears from the image in discussion. You can see that from other pictures on the internet. On the nominated image the wall of the building right behind the tower and the flagpoles on the right are also leaning. However they do not lean on other pictures, and it is very unlikely that the flagpoles were consistently not mounted upright as they are new and not hundreds of years old. Moreover I took some pictures there by myself in this summer, although I stood closer to the hill. I did not notice this extreme Pisa tower effect. --JRff (talk) 18:24, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good evening!. If this photo overed on two degrees to left?) --Vizu (talk) 17:50, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good evening. Just rotating by two degrees will not work.
I did outline the most important problem already on the QI nomination page: If you rotate, you will get the lamp and the people upright. But you have to crop the image afterwards in order to get a normal rectangular frame again. As there is not enough room at the right side this will cut the man's elbow.
The second problem is that the image is not just tilted. If you just rotate so that the lamp is upright, the basement of the sculpture will be still sloped to the right. To correct for this, one would have to make a complex perspective correction, e.g. with the free tool "hugin". And this is not worthwile because of the elbow problem described above.
I hope that I answered your question. I wish I could answer in Russian in order to make it easier for you. But I never had the opportunity to learn that language.

Please check your image. There are CAs at the top and JPEG artifacts. Resolution could be better and EXIF data is missing. --XRay 05:33, 27 July 2018 (UTC) ✓ Done CA issue fixed. As for JPEG artifacts: The image was shot in RAW and only compressed as JPEG with the final step, 95% and no chroma subsampling. Thus JPEG artifacts seem unlikely. Where do you think you see such artifacts? With respect to EXIF: Data were left out intentionally for privacy reasons. I don't see that EXIF is required for QI. At least it was so for years. I could add minimum EXIF data, but then I should now what. With respect to resolution: Can't help about that. Sensor has only 7.1 MP. Minimum resolution for QI is however 2 MP, so resolution should be sufficient IMHO. --Johannes Robalotoff 13:54, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Comment There are still CAs. Please look at the top of the building. And yes, 2 MP is the minimum. But for easy to take photographs more can be requested. Please have a look to the guide lines. And it's not necessary to remove all EXIF data for privacy reasons. The QI rules do not require EXIF data, but it's very kind for the reviewers to have these EXIF date to give the photographer hint to resolve photographic issues. --XRay 15:53, 30 July 2018 (UTC) ✓ Done Improved CA correction. Reaching out to you

[edit]

Hi, I just want to say that I may well be wrong, but I mean no harm, and I just call it the way I see it. I certainly don't wish to discourage you and will be looking to see whether I think any of the photos you nominate at QIC might be good FP candidates.

Happy New Year, and I'll see you on the boards.

Best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:05, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ikan,

thank you for your message. I do not mean any harm to anyone either. It is just that I was very, very surprised about your judgement. This is the reason why I wrote a longer answer to your post today on the QI discussion page. I have seen many softer images being promoted, not only macro shots, for which "crispness" is obviously much more difficult to achieve. And I have seen people prefer halos from over-sharpening over the residual, but natural softness of a lens, thus spoiling images with artifacts. That's why I felt I had to react.

The problem with noise reduction, as seen on the mobile phone image just discussed, is also not only the absolute loss of detail on fine structures. A painted wood has a consistent "grain" from brush strokes. However inappropriate noise reduction as from a mobile phone or a cheap compact camera creates an inconsistent look of details, because it smears out structures with lower contrast but preserves high-contrast structures of the same size with distinct edges . This inconsistency looks much more irritating and artificial at full resolution than moderate, but consistent lens softness, which softens everything on the same scale.

But apart from that - I don't think that my particular images currently under discussion really suffer from lens softness. As I wrote before, what disturbs you is most likely a matter of edge contrast, not sharpness. The chateau is very bright compared with the foreground. Thus highlights have to be compressed into a relatively small tone range. If I would try to compensate this with even more sharpening, this would not make the image better.

Regards and happy new year, --JRff (talk) 13:38, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I appreciate your detailed replies and will think about them. I wonder if there would be a good talk page for more people to have a fuller discussion about these things, not focusing mainly on one or two of your photos and E3's photos but more generally. I may learn something. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:29, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cape Town pictures

[edit]
How does this one look now?

Colors are more saturated and there seems to be a purple/red component on the mountains that was not there before. May be white balance is a bit different? Highlights on the houses are slightly brighter. But most important: There is uncompensated CA that was not visible at all in the old version! Detail on the mountains and plants is not better, perhaps even worse. And I see sharpening halos on the left an right side of the mountain chain. In short, it is not what I expected. What software do you use for raw conversion? --JRff (talk) 21:02, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adobe. Daniel Case (talk) 06:30, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For Adobe I cannot give recommendations about parameters. But you should at least try RawTherapee. It is free and open source community software, so a test will not cost you any money. The advantage of this program is that it does very little on your image per default. It does Demosaicing and then applies a tone curve similar to that which was applied by the camera to the JPEG file which is embedded in the RAW file. If your lens is in the program's database it will also correct for distortion and chromatic aberration. That's all, so far as I remember. I.e., per default there will be no noise reduction and no sharpening at all. Of course this is not acceptable for the final result. But it is a starting point where you can see what detail is actually in the raw file in absence of any processing artifacts. You can then gradually add sharpening and noise reduction as well as adjust luminance, contrast, white balance etc., and you can see step for step if this improves or rather degrades your image. It may be a bit more difficult to use than some commercial converters. But you have full control (which is not the case, e.g., for Canon's converters which I have used for some time).

No, it is not tilted. Please measure vertical lines (like the street light, the door and the windows in the basement) with a ruler, then you will see that they are upright. It may look tilted at first sight, because the upper floor of the house is deformed in reality, since it is very old timber framing. --Johannes Robalotoff 10:59, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Earth 2019

[edit]

Hallo Johannes Robalotoff,

vom 1. bis 31. Mai 2019 kannst Du wieder beim Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth Deutschland (WLE 2019) teilnehmen.

Quality image

[edit]

Hello. Thank you for your review in [1]. Because I don't know a lot about quality images, can you help me understand when an image can be quality image or not? Xaris333 (talk) 01:17, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Xaris333, the guidelines for quality images can be found at this place. What is meant with "quality" here are mostly technical aspects. This means that an image which is well recognized as a valuable contribution might not be a "quality image" in the sense of the technical QI review process. Except for simple subjects, high technical quality will often require advanced photographic equipment and good software for post-processing.
For the example of your picture File:Holy Cross monastery at Anogyra 02.jpg I wrote among other criticism: "Very unsharp on the right side". From various indicators (picture sharp in the middle, focal length, subject) one can infer that this is a limitation of your lens. From Exif data one can see that you have used a compact travel camera with ultra-zoom lens. The tininess of the equipment combined with the extreme zoom range and moderate price forces the manufacturer to accept heavy compromises with respect to optical parameters. In consequence you have to accept also the deficiency in the result.
I also wrote: "Sharpening halo around the tower". This is a pure software effect of in-camera processing. All data from photo sensors have to be sharpened by software, that's normal. But there are compact cameras which exaggerate in this point, so that the algorithm produces artifacts. In most cases these are halos around high-contrast edges. If the configuration menu of your camera allows this, you could reduce sharpening there in order to weaken the effect.
My comment "aggressive noise reduction" is another expression of "posterization", which another reviewer wrote about your other image. Every photo sensor produces signal noise which makes images "grainy". The disturbing effect has to be removed by software, either in-camera oder during post processing. However if this is done too aggressively, it kills detail from the image. As the effect is worse the smaller a sensor is, people spend lots of money and carry big and heavy equipment with themselves. Your travel zoom has a very small sensor. Thus you cannot expect too much image quality with respect to noise. If the configuration menu of your camera allows it, you could reduce noise reduction. This could extenuate posterization, but perhaps make disturbing noise visible.
Finally I wrote something about "distortions". You can see that the walls of the building are bent at the border of the image. Such "barrel" distortions are common for zoom lenses. One can correct them by post-processing with, e.g., the free software Hugin. Very modern cameras even correct the effect by in-camera software.
Hope this explanation will help you. Regards, --JRff (talk) 11:44, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is the fountain really oval? If not, it is not a quality image for me. -- Spurzem 08:47, 27 August 2020 (UTC)  Comment Any circle appears oval if not seen exactly from an axis perpendicular to its center point. That's just geometry. Therefore I don't know why this should be an issue for a photograph. --Johannes Robalotoff 12:12, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I know the problem. Sometimes it is unfortunately difficult or even impossible to make a quality picture due to the circumstances. -- Spurzem 12:23, 27 August 2020 (UTC)  Comment Circumstances? Geometrical facts do not change under circumstances. I.e. no one can photograph a circle (or even see it, without a camera) from the side without elliptic appearance. It's just physics. The only possibility to avoid this is to position a camera drone exactly above the fountain. Only then the circular base would appear as a circle. So I still wonder about the strange remark. --Johannes Robalotoff 17:56, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Johannes_Robalotoff,

Question Am I right, the focus is sitting between foreground and background? --Augustgeyler 13:01, 15 November 2021 (UTC)  Comment No. The focus is sitting on the background. Look at the wires of the power transmission lines. Even those can be clearly distinguished. And the trees on the higher alps are also sharp, though in a haze. It would be even difficult to have them unsharp at f/11. --Johannes Robalotoff 08:15, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Now I got it. Even the wooden fence in the left foreground became sharp. I am just wondering if the composition could be improved when some parts of the unsharp foregroundwall were cropped. What do you think? --Augustgeyler 10:05, 16 November 2021 (UTC) I think, it is a matter of taste. I did not find it disturbing that the foreground is not completely sharp. Also: When viewed at 60% or less no one will probably notice it. However I see your point if I imagine the image to be printed on a big poster. Then the crop would help to make the unsharp part less dominating. On the other hand, I like the overall composition more with the wall. So it's a tradeoff. I it is a real problem for you, I could live withdrawal. Just tell me.--Johannes Robalotoff 08:07, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I see your point. I will not promote or decline your nomination and ask other reviewers to give their vote. --Augustgeyler 10:18, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Earth 2022 - Deutschland

[edit]

Hallo Johannes Robalotoff,

Dear Johannes Robalotoff,

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 150K pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 35 countries around the world.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.

Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2022.

Kind regards, Wiki Loves Monuments team, 09:38, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Einladung zu Veranstaltung

[edit]

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/GLAM_on_Tour_zu_Gast_beim_Greifswald_Moor_Centrum

Herzliche Grüße Botanist in Berlin (talk) 16:42, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Danke für die Einladung. Antwort ist per E-Mail erfolgt. --JRff (talk) 15:47, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Earth 2023 - Deutschland

[edit]

Hallo Johannes Robalotoff,

Upload your photos for WLE

Upload your photos via the new Upload-Map
Upload your photos for the special price

--JRff (talk) 08:43, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
