Thanks for the note. You're right; I mistakenly uploaded that image (which I drew) without enough background information. I uploaded a later version (Image:ChasChaplin.JPG) into the English Wikipedia, adding more complete information about the illustration's origins, along with rights information. Greg Williams

category

[edit]

I've made a category for you - category:Greg Williams. When you upload another lovely picture, please use that one too, so it would be easyer to update your gallery page.
Best regards, Yuval YChat13:50, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yuval Y: Thanks. I have a question, though - since I'm new to Web design. I added a new comic to my Wikimedia gallery yesterday ("Facial hair"), but I'm not sure how to update the gallery you've created. When I click the "edit" tag, I'm not seeing the slug lines for the individual images. What am I missing? (Also, I made some minor changes to the "Hyperthymesia" comic, but apparently didn't properly replace the original version. User error, I'm sure. The newer version is slugged Image:Hyperthymesia cartoon.jpg.jpg ) Best, --Greg Williams 14:05, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just add a line reading "image:filename.jpg|file description", and hit enter. Galleries are weird like that. -- Zanimum 20:56, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll give it a try with my next upload. Thanks.--Greg Williams 03:17, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The caricatures are nice, but...

[edit]

Would it be possible for us to have picture(s) of you which can be used in articles about you. :)

You know the drill about license info so I wont bore you with it. :) --Cat out 16:53, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be happy to provide something. I'll have to look for a decent photo. Or would a cartoon portrait be OK? --Greg Williams 14:08, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Technically, Cool Cat, I don't know if Greg meets our notability rules on Wikipedia. Hopefully I'll be able to get the cartoon in a few newspapers, and then he will meet notability. But yeah, I'm going to try and get some sort of online promo packet together, so it would be good to have a cartoon portrait. -- Zanimum 20:49, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Note to Zanimum: If you get any nibbles of interest from newspapers, I can provide higher-resolution versions for the purposes of print publication. I'm saving B/W bitmap and CMYK color versions of each comic. (In the CMYK version, the artwork and text are confined to the black channel, to avoid registration problems.) I'm developing my own small-scale comic distribution system at work, and could easily use the same formatting for the Wikipedia files.--Greg Williams 03:46, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Like a syndicate? Or just an internal comic distribution system? -- Zanimum 16:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually an "internal syndicate," if that makes sense. I hope to make my work available to other properties within our parent company, for print and Web publication. Still working on the technical end of things. --Greg Williams 01:20, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiWorld

[edit]

Your Wikiworld comics are great! -Ravedave 06:41, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of people like them, and we have quite a bit of enthusiasm for running them in The Wikipedia Signpost (the weekly community newspaper on the English Wikipedia). I hope that's agreeable with you, it looks like you've already done enough that we could run for several weeks. --Michael Snow 04:08, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great, Michael. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help set things in motion. On the technical side of things, I've been finding that the comics seem most readable if they are used at actual size. The last several that I've uploaded have been 650 pixels wide, I believe - but I'm working with a Web designer who suggests a width of 760 px instead. I'd be happy to upload future comics (and updated versions of the earlier ones) to make them a consistent size, if something in that range seems workable for you.
If you would like to include a visual element in the Signpost's contents box, I can provide a small promotional icon for each comic, and/or a stand-alone version of the WikiWorld logo. Thanks! --Greg Williams 18:34, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actual size sounds right, readability is a good point. In terms of width, I don't think 650 px is a problem at all. Web design is not my field by any means, though I do wonder if 760 px would cause issues for people who are still on 800x600 monitors. Since some amount of space is always taken up by the sidebar, their browser might either have to scroll sideways or auto-resize. But anyway, I don't know how that weighs against other considerations, so I'll let you determine what the ideal width is going forward.
I'm not sure if the Signpost front page will use a visual or not; it will need a text link for people to click on so they can reach the comic rather than be taken directly to the logo/icon. But if you produce a stand-alone form of the logo, there's a decent chance we'll find some use for it. --Michael Snow 06:27, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded a stand-alone version of the WikiWorld logo to Wikimedia Commons (slugged Image:WikiWorld logo.JPG). It should be large enough for any conceivable use, but seems readable at a reduced size, below.
I'll stick with a width of 650 pixels for the comics themselves, for now. If we find that a larger size is preferable, we can make that adjustment later. What will work best for your deadline? Would you like to launch with the most recent upload (Redshirt), then update to the latest comic with each new Signpost? (I should be uploading a new comic within the next few days. Since I have a few comics in reserve, that will help me to stay on a weekly schedule - in case I'm unable to create something new in a given week.) --Greg Williams 13:22, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I don't really care which one you use (I think all are quite good); feel free to pick any one you choose (in which case, I think Redshirt would be fine). Our deadline is about 17:00 UTC Monday (Noon EST). For the first comic, I'd like to have a brief introduction of the comic, as well as you personally, so, if you could answer a few questions, I'd really appreciate it:
  1. How long have you been drawing comics? How long have you been in the newspaper industry?
  2. What first got you involved in Wikipedia?
  3. What are your future plans with WikiWorld and your other works?
  4. Is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your works?
When you get a chance, feel free to post the responses here, or e-mail me or Michael. Thanks again, and looking forward to future comics. Ral315 20:04, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll send an e-mail later this weekend, with answers to your questions. (I should be uploading a new WikiWorld comic within the next few days, but it probably makes sense to start off with the "Redshirt" comic. I can message you and Michael each week, when I've uploaded a new comic. It always should be available to you a couple of days before your Monday deadline.) Thanks! --Greg Williams 01:55, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've sent the answers to your questions in an e-mail. Please let me know if I can do anything else to help. --Greg Williams 11:26, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I also thought the comic was very funny. However, I think the licensing might be wrong. See Image talk:Redshirt comic.jpg#License. Superm401 00:01, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the license, the current Creative Commons ShareAlike license was recommended and instituted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Other licensing possibilities have been discussed, but it appears that ShareAlike may be the most appropriate choice, considering the unique blend of content and visuals. --Greg Williams 01:39, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I copied your reply over to Image_talk:Redshirt_comic.jpg#License and replied there. Superm401 07:17, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Minor issues with the 2007-06-11 WikiWorld image

[edit]

I saw two mistakes with the image for w:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2007-06-11/WikiWorld. One mistake is in the second to last paragraph, "Olsen decided to to care permanently". The other is in the last paragraph, "Mike is now an institution in Fruita". Because you are the creator of the WikiWorld, I thought I should tell you. If it is worth fixing, maybe you could? Thanks. -- kenb215 talk 03:25, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note - and I'll definitely make the first change. I'm not sure what you're seeing as a mistake in the second example, however. Can you clarify for me? Thanks! --Greg Williams 04:17, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay. For the second one, "Mike is now an institution" should be "Mike is now at an institution", unless Mike somehow became an institution. Is that clear, or did I make a mistake? -- kenb215 talk 16:49, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PNG vs JPEG

[edit]

Hello and thanks for making the WikiWorld comics for us! I noticed that you've been saving these comics in the JPEG format. You would get better compression and avoid inserting JPEG artifacts if you saved them in the PNG format. So, if you could start saving your drawings in PNG from the start, it would be great. Thanks! —Remember the dot (talk) 17:36, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, if you're looking for another article to illustrate, en:Dead Week wouldn't be a bad choice: "At Columbia University, students open their windows at midnight and scream as loudly as possible on the Sunday of finals week each semester. The tradition helps students release their pent up stress and anxiety about exams." —Remember the dot (talk) 17:43, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've had an earlier discussion with a couple of people about the advantages/disadvantages of switching to PNG files, but the whole issue is a little unclear to me now. Obviously, I didn't switch - for some reason. I'll have to check back to see what was said. (I'll also check the "Dead Week" article. Thanks!) --Greg Williams 22:58, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I found the old discussion at en:User talk:Greg Williams#Syndicating Wikiworld..., and I'd like to give you some more explanation. With JPEG, the only way to avoid damaging the quality of your drawings is to disable compression entirely. This makes for very large file sizes. With PNG, you can have your cake and eat it too: PNG does not reduce the quality in the slightest yet can compress images very well.
So then, why would people ever want to use JPEG? Well, when you use JPEG for its intended purpose, digital copies of photographs, the loss of quality is not noticeable and the compression is greatly appreciated. PNG does not compress photographs very well because it makes sure the image is perfectly preserved. For non-photographic data, PNG is almost always better.
I hope that helps clear up the issue for you. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. —Remember the dot (talk) 22:20, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
One other thing: When our wiki software scales down JPEG images (like the WikiWorld comics), it re-compresses them and introduces more JPEG artifacts (blurriness). This problem can be avoided by saving in the PNG format. If you saved in PNG, you would actually by able to upload very high resolution copies of the WikiWorld comics if you chose, and the wiki software would be able to scale them down to a reasonable display size without trouble. I'm not saying that you need to upload high-resolution copies, but if you wanted to, PNG would allow you to do that without trouble. —Remember the dot (talk) 05:55, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thank you for uploading the latest WikiWorld comic, Image:Cashew wikiworld.png, in the PNG format. I appreciate it! —Remember the dot (talk) 02:49, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help required

[edit]

I'm writing an article on w:Abilene paradox in the Tamil Wikipedia. It would be great if you could create an illustration for the article as follows. Have some people/animals (preferably ethnicity neutral) sit around in a discussion. Add individual thought bubbles to each of them showing disparate ideas about food/outing etc., and a common chat bubble showing them giving an entirely different opinion as a group. If you leave the bubles empty, I can add Tamil text into it. A still better option would be to have pictures of thoughts inside the bubbles so that it can be used readily across wikis. Please indicate if you can help with this. -- Sundar 07:39, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. It's an interesting concept, but I'm afraid it might be difficult to boil down into the limited format of a WikiWorld comic. I've printed out the text of the article, and will give it some thought. --Greg Williams 12:50, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for agreeing to think over it. If not a WikiWorld comic, it can be an illustration to the Abilene anecdote. In fact, I'd prefer the latter. -- Sundar 15:01, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

png -> vector?

[edit]

Hey Greg! I can't tell you how amazing your work is! I was just thinking about the size of the images - I am not sure what program you use/if you hand draw but, if you aren't already, it would be greatly appreciated if you upload the highest res version possible since, we can then convert the images to vectors.
