Hello Gareth!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 08:58, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
New Category Mistakes
[edit]When you are creating a category, but forget the prefix, as in New South Wales V Sets and one other today, it's helpful to Page Patrol if you put a {{Speedy}} on it -- saves us having to guess whether you are really creating a new gallery or just forgot the prefix. Usually that becomes obvious from looking at the history, but the speedy means we can blow it away without doing any research. Thanks. (and don't worry about it, it happens all the time) Jim . . . . disambiguation
[edit]There is no need to predisambiguate categories like Category:Bull Creek Train Station, Perth but where there is a need please be mindful that disambiguation should be by the highest order subnational boundaries first ie Bullcreek trainstation, Western Australia this is especialy important on lines where not all stations are within the same metropolitan boundary. Also Perth itself is a poor choice for disambiguation because there are many similarities between the various Perths. Personally I see no reason to categorise to such a low level as the stations arent sufficiently large enough to warrant individual categories, suggest maybe to by line ie Armadale-Thornlie, Fremantle, Midland, Mandurah and Jondalup Gnangarra 15:41, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Neutral Bay
[edit]Thanks for helping with Neutral Bay images, but it wasn't necessary to delete the "Neutral Bay, etc" category from some of the files. They can be in more than one category, and it's appropriate to have them in the Neutral Bay category as well as the Neutral Bay homes category. I'll put them back in the NB category.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,

State Savings Bank
[edit]Why did you remove these pix from Category:Beaux-Arts architecture in Australia? I put a lot of work into that. Another editor's work should not be undone unless there's a bloody good reason for it. I might add that this is a new category and it is worth having Oz examples of this style in this category. Sardaka (talk) 07:56, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
- The creation of the category is a good thing. I removed the SSB pictures from Category:Beaux-Arts architecture in Australia because the building has its own category which you (correctly) adjusted from being categorised under Category:Beaux-Arts architecture to Category:Beaux-Arts architecture in Australia. COM:OVERCAT says the following - "always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those" and "don't place an item into a category and its parent". In this case Category:State Savings Bank building is the most specific category and Category:Beaux-Arts architecture in Australia is its parent. Gareth (talk) 05:17, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:
- 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
- In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
- In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Bots
[edit]
You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.
What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.
This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.
If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!
- The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary.
- Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly.
Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.
Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.
Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
Church in St Marys/Colyton
[edit]I reverted the pix of the Reformed Church to the Colyton Category. I know the sign says "St Marys", but according to Gregory's Street Directory, the church is in Colyton. Apparently the boundary goes down the middle of the road and the church is on the Colyton side of the boundary.

- I checked the church website, which says it is in St Marys, but I am happy to leave the pics in the Colyton category. Gareth (talk) 20:59, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]
Hi Gareth, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Transport for New South Wales "C" logo?
[edit]Hey there! I noticed fairly recently you uploaded some high-quality PNG versions of Transpirt for New South Wales' icons - File:TfNSW B.png, File:TfNSW F.png, File:TfNSW L.png, and File:TfNSW T.png. I'm quite impressed that you were able to extract such high quality images from the source that you did. May I ask how you did so? Other than that, I also wanted to ask if you'd be able to extract and upload a high-quality purple "C" logo, the one used by NSW TrainLink to signify coaches? One can be found at the top of transport.info's page for regional trains and coaches. :) PhilipTerryGraham (talk) 18:20, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
- Not much technique to it - I just visited the page listed in the source, right-clicked and selected view image. Revisiting the source images, I can see that the ends of the URLs look like this:
?key=image_zone_10_0&keepfile=yes
. The number to the right ofimage_zone_
is 10 for the T, 13 for the B, 14 for the F and 15 for the L. This implies the C should be 11 or 12, but I tried changing the number (and I also tried 9) and only got a blank page.
- As for the page you linked, I opened Firefox's Page Info window and was able to find an SVG of the hop logo (which en.wp already has) located at https://www.transportnsw.info/themes/custom/tfnsw_bootstrap/logo.svg, but there was no sign of the T or the C icons. I then used the inspector function to find that the path for the C icon is
/themes/custom/tfnsw_bootstrap/assets/icons/icons.svg#tp_coach
. Noticing the overlap of the two URLs, I combined them to form https://www.transportnsw.info/themes/custom/tfnsw_bootstrap/assets/icons/icons.svg#tp_coach, but again only got a blank page. Other modifications to the URL were equally unsuccessful, so at this point I'm out of ideas. Gareth (talk) 19:37, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
- Update. I wondered if I could extract the image from the network map PDF linked from the page you linked above, and learned that Photoshop can import PDFs and convert them to raster images. The PDF is vector-based, so I was able to remove the background and get a high resolution raster image of the logo. I've uploaded it as File:TfNSW C.png. It's a shame to end up with a raster copy of a vector source ... but that's better than nothing. Gareth (talk) 21:00, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
- Awesome stuff! I'll definitely be sure to study up more in the future on how to surf through page sources, and how to be more proficient with photoshop! Haha! Thanks for putting in such an effort to get all these logos uploaded, Gareth. It's really appreciated! :) PhilipTerryGraham (talk) 00:20, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Regarding the uploading of my photographs
[edit]Hey there, again! I've noticed in recent months that you've been uploading some of my photographs from Flick onto Wikimedia Commons. Examples include my Mosman Bay, Hurstville, and Oatley station photos. I appreciate your efforts, but would it be okay if you let me know first about which of my images you would like to see on Wikimedia Commons, so I can upload them myself? There's a lot of detail and tagging work, along with potential edits to refine the image, that I like to do before the "Publish" button is clicked. I have my own author templates and user categories that I usually implement into the file descriptions too. In addition, my original image files have exact timestamps down to the second, along with more accurate coordinate and heading data as well. It would be much, much more convenient for me to have uploaded the images myself, instead of searching around for my images and then manually doing all the tagging and such afterwards. – PhilipTerryGraham (talk) 03:57, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
- I will let you know if I see any of your photos on Flickr that I would like to add to Commons.--Gareth (talk) 15:52, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Gareth: Thank you! It's much appreciated! It's that time of year when I'm having extreme difficulty connecting to Wikimedia sites (it has taken me a good 40 minutes or so to get your page to load so I could write and save this reply), so if there is something I upload on Flickr in the next two or three weeks that you'd like on Commons, you might have to wait until the site starts acting nice and loads properly for me again in a few weeks' time like it's been doing annually, when I can do my tagging and such... :/ PhilipTerryGraham (talk) 06:10, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
