Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:46, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

It seems the upload stopped after 51 minutes (3 hours are missing) --McZusatz (talk) 18:46, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- @McZusatz: : that's the actual duration of the video, where did you get the "3 hours" reference from? --DarTar (talk) 03:50, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- Your upload says it should be 3 h 47 min 7 s long. --McZusatz (talk) 12:04, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Locations
[edit]Hi DarTar - I saw you've been adding a number of photos from inaturalist, for which, many thanks! These photos all have location data, this is very important, please remember to copy it across to the files on Commons too. See e.g. my edit here. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 00:12, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- @MPF: thanks for the note. Importing the geocoordinates should be possible programmatically. @Kaldari: is this something you considered for your gadget? --DarTar (talk) 00:16, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- Excellent, thanks! - MPF (talk) 00:20, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- As an aside, I fear that some of the Harlan's Hawk pics are misidentified; the bird in pics File:Buteo jamaicensis harlani 62390529.jpg, File:Buteo jamaicensis harlani 62390525.jpg, File:Buteo jamaicensis harlani 62390515.jpg (all the same bird) has a reddish tail that Harlan's doesn't ever have, and is just a dark western B. j. calurus. Only a single reviewer on iNat, I suspect it will get reidentified there soon. I'll rename them later when I've a bit more time. File:Buteo jamaicensis harlani - iNaturalist 55932605.jpg is also very doubtful, probably a dark juvenile calurus (I'll check more later). But at least, File:Buteo jamaicensis harlani 60339711.jpg (with 3 iNat reviews) is the real thing! - MPF (talk) 00:48, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- Excellent, thanks! - MPF (talk) 00:20, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Hypselonotus linea 55939245.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).
