How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Interpretation of COM:INUSE

I would like to to get your additional comments to your decision to keep these two files: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ведущий.jpg, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Евгений Хачериди, Денис Стоялов.jpg. These pictures were not in use at the moment of proposing them for deletion, and, obviously, they are of no educational value (and of no value whatsoever). Next day after after I proposed these files for deletion the uploader added them to his userpage, without even any caption: now it looks like this. Consequently, do you believe that any contributor is free to keep any image uploaded by them and proposed for deletion just by means of temporarily adding this image to their user page? Honestly, I don't think this is a correct approach. Andrei Romanenko (talk) 12:54, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

  • On my last 500 logged actions (filtered with "VisualFileChange"), 193 have been to speedy delete personal images, those deletions were done within two criterion 1/the subject of the images 2/ the contributions of the uploaders. My appaoch was here exactly the same, 1/ I opened the images, and yes I agree they are personal images and have no specific EV but 2/ I checked Special:CentralAuth/DENAMAX and they have done more than 24000 contributions to the Wikimedia project, and 3/ when I have closed the DRs they were indeed used in user space, I have indeed not investigate "when" they have been added to that user page but I did not think that an investigation was necessary. COM:INUSE is quite clear: "The uploading of small numbers of images (e.g. of yourself) for use on a personal user page of Commons or another project is allowed as long as that user is or was an active participant on that project".
All criteria are met:
"small numbers of images (e.g. of yourself)": two images are concerned by the DRs lincked, and I supposed "two" is indeed a "small number".
"for use on a personal user page of Commons or another project": they are indeed in use.
"user is or was an active participant": with more than 24000 contribution, I also supposed that was enouth.
I don't think it's worth our arguing about it or even wasting any more time talking about it. If you really think I did a mistake then renominate them for deletion and I will just add a comment without closing them. I don't see what I can tell more, I hope I helped you. Hallo Christian Ferrier, sorry for my bad English, my French is even worse. Due to this file, I’d like to show you the Club's statute. § 1 (2) states, that the Club's logo shows, among other things, the Berlin Bear. This figure is public domain. It would be nice, if you restore the file. Greetings. -- Platte U.N.V.E.U. 21:52, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Could you let me know how you got the images from Long et al. 2021? (I was trying in vain for some time to find the image files or extract them from the PDF.) I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Tol (talk | contribs) @ 00:28, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

  • @Tol: Hello, after to have dowloaded the PDF I open it with Adobe Reader, I select the image with the tool "selection", then with a right click on my mouse an option "copy the image" become available, sometimes it is compulsory to make a snapshot because the image is not selectable, see [9] but the quality/size is much less good. I copy the image, I open Adobe Photoshop, I create a new document (File → New), I don't how that works but usually the new document have automatically the size of the image I just copied. I paste the image previously copied, usually I assign a sRGB color space (Edit → Assign Profile), I save the image as PNG and that's all. Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:42, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
