I am attempting to navigate my way safely through US and NZ copyright waters, uploading and editing as I go. I tend to upload photos I've taken of New Zealand wildlife or interesting/notable people and places I've met or visited. I am working with the BHL-Wiki working group to come up with an agreed SDC schema for BHL illustrations and am keen to do the same for natural history specimen image photographs. I've also completed some SumOfAllPaintings work for some New Zealand GLAMs. I'm an avid fan of the iNaturalist2Commons tool. For more on me see my Wikipedia user page.
Currently working on (November 2024)
[edit]Currently working on Biodiversity Heritage Library images using the draft data model for BHL images in Wikicommons. I'm attempting to add structured data for BHL images using OpenRefine. See this link for further information on "how to". I'm also very keen to add depicts statements - although given taxonomy changes this can be a challenge! My motivation for doing this is to support the efforts of the new BHL Wikimedian in Residence. I also add creator and category pages for artists and combining this with my SDC work.
I'm also working on New Zealand moth species - creating categories and importing research grade images from iNaturalist, BHL and other openly licensed or public domain publications. I then add them to Wikidata and Wikipedia. Particularly working on this category and this category. Unofficial Wikicommons query service.
I'm adding appropriately licensed images for NZ species generally, particularly from GBIF, Landcare Research Ltd, Auckland Museum & any appropriately licensed iNaturalist images.

VisualFileChange
[edit]How to bulk edit categories of images - Example Category:Landcare Research.
- First create category and if needed Wikidata entry for institution.
- Next go to Help:VisualFileChange.js
- At present I'm only using the "Just try it before installing".
- Search for text that is in all images you want to categories. For Landcare Research images I used "landcareresearch.co.nz".
- Scroll down the list to the end to ensure all images can be selected.
- Go back up to the top of the page.
- Then select "append any text" and tick "(De-)select all uploaded" box.
- Type in category markup ie [[Category:Landcare Research]]
- Then press "execute" and wait for it to run.
- To get result of views per page see - GLAMorgan tool.
Rawpixel and others claiming copyright over public domain images after "cleaning up" the image
[edit]Rawpixel appears to be a company that takes public domain images and makes minor changes to the image and then claims copyright over them. Where I come across these images the appropriate tag is Modifications-ineligible without the :. See this as an example of how to for metadata.
