It sits on the north bank of the Chicago River directly across from the Loop district. The complex, that was designed in 1959 and completed in 1964, consists of two corncob-shaped 179 m, 65-story towers.

The lighthouse is one of the oldest concrete lighthouses in Iceland and was built in 1918. It served the fishing town of Akranes until it was deactivated in 1947 in favor of the larger structure several meters away.
