Text on reverse:

JAPANESE MAIDENS CHATTING WITH A FRIEND IN A REST HOUSE IN THE PARK, YOKOHAMA.

The charm of Japan is in the street life of the lower classes, the kindliness of the simple country folk, the delicate art adorning each common object of every-day life, the parks of cherry blossoms that break the monotonies of the cities, the trim crysanthemum gardens, and above all the enchanting scenery -- those giant cedars that overshadow the moss-grown shrines, those volcanic cones of ineffably graceful curve, those torrents to be crossed warily on stepping-stones or on "hanging bridges," stretched like a spider's thread and trembling at every step, the carolling of nightingales and larks, and last but not least the women in their dainty dresses and with their sweet, innocent faces. A Japanese lady reminds one of a delicate sea-anemone which at the first approach of a rough hand shrinks into itself, avoiding contact with the practical hardness of every-day life. She is almost morbidly sensitive, but her natural pride and politeness forbid her in any way to retaliate.
