Description

Begg, Alexander and Walter R. Nursey. Winnipeg in 1869 [map]. Scale not given. In: Alexander Begg and Walter R. Nursey. Ten years in Winnipeg : a Narration of the Principal Events in the History of the City of Winnipeg from the Year A.D. 1870 to the Year A.D. 1879 Inclusive. Winnipeg: Times Printing and Publishing House, 1879.

This simple diagram may have the distinction of being the first map to be printed in Manitoba, in 1879. It seems to have been composed from type available in a printing shop, and not engraved on lithographic stone. Not only is it a street map of Winnipeg just before the transfer of Rupert’s Land to Canada, but a land use map as well. Post Office Street is present Lombard Street. (Warkentin and Ruggles. Historical Atlas of Manitoba. map 191, p. 380)
