Joe Mattina, the aircraft commander aboard the HH-3F Pelican helicopter that saved the lives of two people aboard the fishing vessel Wayward Wind that sank in 1988, receives an Air Medal from Rear Adm. Thomas P. Ostebo during a ceremony at Air Station Kodiak, Thursday, July 19, 2012, Kodiak, Alaska. Mattina and his crew conducted the rescue at a time before rescue swimmers were implimented at Air Station Kodiak and executed some very challenging maneuvers in 15-foot seas, 40 mph winds and blowing snow during the rescue.
