Description
English: Mahadeva temple

The Vadakunathan Temple is situated in Thrissur, Kerala. It’s is a UNESCO world heritage site & has won a UNESCO prize ‘Award of Excellence’ 2015 for the remarkable conservation efforts of Sree Vadakkumnathan temple. Believed to have been built by Lord Parasurama who reclaimed Kerala from the sea, the Vadakkumnathan Temple is one of the oldest in the State. A classic example of the Kerala style of architecture, the temple has many decorative murals and pieces of art. Exquisite murals on the Mahabharataadorn the walls of the shrine. This is the venue of the world famous Pooram Festival celebrated annually in April-May. The fireworks atthe Pooramare a spectacular sight. This is the first Shiva temple created by Lord Parasurama. Shiva here is more popularly known as Vadakkunnathan. Vadakkunnatha Temple is situated at the heart of Thrissur city. The name Thrissur is derived from ‘Thiru-Shiva-Peroor’, which literally translates to “The city of the sacred Shiva”.

Thrissur was also known as Vrishabhadripuram, Vrishachala and Thenkailasam or Dakshina Kailasam (Kailasa of the south) in ancient days.
