Description

This wavy roofed glass building, in Grønnegata 94 in Tromsø, houses the Tromsø Bibliotek og Byarkiv ("library and city archive").

The building was constructed under the original roof of the former Fokus Kino, which was designed by architect Gunnar Bøgeberg Haugen and built in 1969. Haugen was inspired by the hyperbolic thin-shell designs of Spanish architect Félix Candela and is formed as four large bows creating a hyperbolic paraboloid. The roof was of such a high quality that the new library building was constructed under it, keeping the self-supported roof the way it was constructed in 1969!

The new library and city archive opened up on August 3rd, 2005.
