Nederlands: Schematische weergave van het principe van thermodynamische stabiliteit. De zwarte curve geeft de totale hoeveelheid vrije energie in een systeem aan. De drie zwarte kogels staan voor drie verschillende staten waarin het systeem zich kan bevinden: instabiel (B), metastabiel (A) en stabiel (C). Om van een metastabiele staat naar een stabiele staat te gaan (een irreversibel proces) moet een energiebarrière overkomen worden, m.a.w. is een bepaalde activeringsenergie nodig. Deze activeringsenergie wordt in de figuur aangegeven in het paars. |
