In 1862 this association handedits charge over to the city, as a nucleusfor a public library, and from this camethe Free Public Library of Lynn, nownumbering over forty thousand volumes.Guided by wise trustees and skilfullibrarians, and encouraged by liberalappropriations, the growth of the libraryto its present proportions has been ashealthy as it has been rapid, and thelarge collection of books represents whatis best in our literature. Recently, veryclose relations have been established be-tween the library and the schools. Specialclassified lists of books for juvenile readersare given in the catalogue, and these listsare furnished to each school for the useof the pupils. Every pupil of a high orgrammar school of the city can takebooks from the library, without restriction

Eachteacher in the publicschools holds six li-brary cards, on whichto obtain severalbooks at one time forclass-room use, a plan 512 THE CITY OF LYNN. similar in principle to thatadopted in Cambridge. Thelibrary is cramped in its presentquarters in the City Hall, anda movement is on foot to securea library building, to cost notless than one hundred thousanddollars. Such a building is oneof the great public needs ofLynn at present, and shouldbe easily secured. The school system properincludes EngUsh and classical^ ^ high schools, sixty two classesni the grammar grade, andeighty-four in the primary grades. Ofa school population (children be-tween the ages of five and fifteen)numbering eight thousand four hun-dred and sixty-five, ninety-six percent are in either the public or paro-chial schools, the latter having severalhundred pupils.
