Text Appearing Before Image:
of spoiledplates or films. Read carefully the booklet which comes withthe camera, and ask questions of the dealer, who will always be willing to explain. Keep reading camera literature until it really means some-thing. At first the amateur takes too much for granted, andthereby causes more loss by waste than the real expense, asfrom the purchase of a camera to the finished picture thereare numerous steps to consider in the matter of economy andavoidance of wastefulness. In the preparation of solutions for developing and printingand carefully observing directions when using, the saving, though small as regards cost of chemicals, means waste inbig letters when used unintelligently as regards plates or filmsand time. Many an otherwise good negative has been utterlyspoiled in careless developing. In printing or making enlargements be sure your solutionsare right before exposing full sheets of paper. Test thesolution, test the paper, and get the time of exposure on a bitof paper first. 286
Text Appearing After Image:
EMBERS. FEDORA E. D. BROWN. Often an amateur will show the results of an entire after-noons or evenings work and say, What is the matter withthese prints? Stain from under-exposure and prolonged de-velopment, or examined in white light before thoroughly fix-ing; blisters from too strong hypo bath, or covered withwhite spots from careless handling in developer. Not onlyis this waste of paper, solutions and time, but it is also sodiscouraging that the amateur often loses interest and saysits too expensive, when the trouble is so much has beenwasted by lack of study and a heedless rushing at the workbefore knowing how to properly set about it. Association with a camera club, if possible, or one of thepostal-print criticism clubs, will prove the greatest help andinspiration, giving the opportunity of comparing work andalso the benefit of others experience and their helpful criti-cism. In fact, it is most essential that some connection of thiskind should be formed as soon as the first step
